• Knowlton Development Corp. (KDC) won the inaugural Zemea Innovation Award from DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company LLC. KDC’s Natural Zea deodorant stick platform took top honors.
Zemea propanediol is a natural, 100% biobased ingredient made from corn sugar through fermentation and developed for use in the cosmetics and personal care market. It is a high-performance, environmentally-sustainable alternative to petroleum-based glycols and glycerin, where the product’s lack of skin irritation, improved moisturization and excellent aesthetic properties are benefits, according to DuPont, Tate & Lyle. Zemea is approved as a natural ingredient by Ecocert and the Natural Products Association, is certified 100% bio-based by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and has both Kosher and Halal certifications.
The Zemea Innovation Award program is designed to recognize companies who have commercialized innovative cosmetics and personal care ingredients or finished products that contain Zemea propanediol. A panel of judges including Tom Branna, VP/editorial director, Happi; Steve Herman, chair, New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists and professor of cosmetic science at Fairleigh Dickinson University; and Steve Hurff, VP-marketing and sales, DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products, reviewed and evaluated 14 nominations from around the globe.
“It is exciting to see the breadth of nominations submitted from around the world where Zemea is a critical part of the innovation achievements. KDC’s developments with Zemea truly embody the spirit of the Zemea Innovation Award,” said Huff. “Specifically, KDC started with targeted product claims built around the performance and sustainable attributes of Zemea which has resulted in this innovative natural deodorant offering.”
“KDC recognizes and understands the importance of the natural products market, and is a leading formulator and producer of natural personal care products,” commented Matt Unger, VP-global business development, innovation and marketing, KDC.”Zemea propanediol enabled KDC to formulate an efficacious, mild, 100% natural deodorant that is clinically proven to support a 24-hour odor protection claim.”
KDC, Quebec, Canada, is a contract manufacturer and formulator for the personal care industry.
