Cosmetic Powder Bead Preparation

US Patent No. 8,658,187 B2; Avon has patented a method of preparing powder beads. It entails solubilizing at least one structuring agent with a solvent in the presence of at least one powder under turbulent high-shear mixing at a tip speed of greater than about 15ft/s to form small, nonspherical nucleated seeds of about 3mm or less in diameter and  thereafter, allowing the nucleated seeds to accrete under laminar low shear mixing at a tip speed of less than about 15ft/s to obtain substantially spherical beads having a diameter of about 3mm to about 30mm.
