Technology Transfer Conference Sponsored by NYSCC

Seminar scheduled for Oct. 20, 2010 in Woodbridge, NJ

The New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) will hold its first Technology Transfer Conference at the Woodbridge Hilton on October 20, 2010. The announcement was made at the chapter's November meeting at the Season’s Restaurant in Washington Township. Steve Herman and Art Georgalas are co-chairs of the event.

The conference will feature selected speakers on the technology transfer process and a poster session. University students and faculty as well as other researchers will be invited to present posters on five broad topics related to personal care. Poster proposals will be judged by an industry advisory panel to select the top 10 in each topic for inclusion in the Conference.The conference will feature speakers who can provide a fundamental overview of how the technology transfer process is currently working. Invited speakers include:

Government-USDA: Vic Chavez, Technology Transfer Coordinator, North Atlantic Area will provide insights into the role of government agencies in the technology transfer process.

Industry: JW Solutions with Dr. Johann Wiechers, an industry perspective.

Academia: Wes Blakeslee, Executive Director of the Office of Technology Transfer, Johns Hopkins University

Legal Aspects: Brian Kacedon, Partner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP

As a special attraction, the keynote speaker will be famed astrophysicist, author and media celebrity Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson of the Hayden Planetarium.

The poster topics to be included at this conference are as follows:

Green Chemistry: technology that reduces the impact of personal care products on the environment.

Botanicals/ Food & Agricultural Products: technology that brings new plant sources to personal care as active ingredients or excipients

Optics and Colloid & Surface Chemistry: technologies from these physical sciences impact cosmetic technology by allowing manipulation of surface appearance and formulation of innovative products

Nutraceuticals: technologies and ingredients that cross over from the nutritional supplement arena provide skin health benefits

Fermentation and Genetic Engineering: biochemical technologies that impact the way we deliver and substantiate anti-aging benefits to the skin.

A $10,000 prize will be awarded to the best poster judged by the NYSCC advisory board. Other cash prizes will be awarded to posters judged to be the best in the aforementioned categories.
