Happy 65th Birthday Cetaphil

2012-02-22 | 12:19

This year, the iconic Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser turns 65 years old! Originally dubbed “Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion,” the product was invented by a pharmacist in 1947 as a compounding vehicle for dermatological remedies. In its early years, Cataphyll Cleansing Lotion was only available from select pharmacists but quickly became a highly recommended product by dermatologists, pediatricians and other healthcare professionals for common skin conditions.

Due to consumer demand, more drugstores began selling the increasingly popular cleanser by the 1960s and by the 1980s it was available at all major retail stores across North America. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser still uses the original formula developed in 1947 with some obvious packaging makeovers along the way. The cleanser remains in high demand with about one bottle sold every minute, according to the company.

Check out some other milestones from 1947:

•Betty Boop, Judy Garland, and Katharine Hepburn were the style icons of the era
•Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart stole the hearts of ladies on and off screen
•Miracle on 34th Street was released in theaters (just 15 cents to catch the show)
•The Roswell Conspiracy began when the army announced a capture of a UFO
•Rosie the Riveter stood proud as the face of women working in factories during the war
•The most popular shade of lipstick was berry-red
•In New York City, Edwin Land demonstrated the first "instant camera", a Polaroid
•Jackie Robinson, the first African American Baseball Professional, signed onto the Brooklyn Dodgers
