Next Generation Styling Solutions from AkzoNobel
2009-05-18 | 04:01
Elfacos T212 enhances the deposition of silicone on hair fibers.
With the acquisition of National Starch complete, AkzoNobel offers the global personal care industry a wide range of formulating solutions for hair and skin care products.
For example, including AkzoNobel's Elfacos T212 liquid polymer in a hair conditioning formula achieves performance that is superior to a leading commercial formulation, according to the company. That's because Elfacos T212 is a polyalkylene glycol derivative which enhances the deposition of silicone onto hair fibers.
According to AkzoNobel, the conditioner formulas were evaluated on bleached European brown hair and performance was confirmed by surface-specific X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) analysis of the fibers.
Elfacos T212 is compatible with anionic, amphoteric, cationic and sugar-based surfactants common to hair conditioning and cleansing formulations. Wet comb panel tests verified the enhanced performance of a finished product when just a small amount of Elfacos T212 is added to a hair conditioning formulation.

Novel Anti-Inflammatory Agents from Lipo Chemicals
2009-05-18 | 01:55
Natural marine extracts have many skin care applications.
Lipo Chemicals, Inc., Paterson, NJ, featured two novel anti-inflammatory agents during the New York SCC Supplier’s Day: Gorgonian Extract GC (INCI: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (and) Sea Whip Extract) and Gorgonian Extract PTG (INCI: Pentylene glycol (and) sea whip extract).
According to Lipo, Gorgonian Extract is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient that is safe, effective, and
environmentally friendly. It is an extract from the marine organism Pseudopterogoria elisabethae (sea
whip), a renewable resource harvested from the Caribbean Sea, which consist primarily of powerful
anti-inflammatory compounds called pseudopterosins.
The anti-inflammatory properties of pseudopterosins are well documented in scientific literature, according to Lipo.
Pseudopterosins have been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators. This
activity has been assayed both in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro enzymatic assay measures inhibition
of phospholipase A2 (PLA2). This enzyme cleaves arachidonic acid from the cell membrane and
makes it available for enzymatic reactions and is the initial enzyme in the arachidonic pathway that
ultimately leads to the synthesis of eicosanoids, the inflammation mediators. These molecules play
an important role in inflammation.
In a study performed to learn the concentration-activity relationships of the pseudopterosin mixture in a unicellular aquatic cellular protist, tetrahymena, a direct correlation was demonstrated between the concentration of the mixture and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, the percentage of use in formulas will correlate with the activity needed to be achieved. Gorgonian Extract is ideal for a variety of elegant, effective skin care and treatment products having a pH range of 4 to 7.

The Sensorial Benefits of Farmal Starches
2009-05-13 | 02:27
Detailed by Corn Products International
Farmal starches are vegetable-derived ingredients that provide formulators with tools to enhance sensorial attributes, such as spreadability, tackiness, shine, oiliness and skin feel.
Available in corn and tapioca variants, their substantial oil and moisture absorbency, as well as particle size and shape, allow starches to be used as effective sensorial modifiers. In fact, starch provides perceivably better skin smoothness than talc due to its uniform granular shape and particle size distribution, which enables it to “roll” as it spreads over the skin.

The Art of Neutralizing Skin Imperfections
2009-05-12 | 02:49
Arch Personal Care Rolls Out ChronoSphere Opticals.
Inspired by artists’ use of clear resinous materials to create realistic qualities in their portraits, Arch Personal Care (Booth No. 1131) has rolled out ChronoSphere Opticals Brite, which work to neutralize skin imperfections.
ChronoSphere Optical Brite (INCI: Silicone and DMPA/isophthalic acid/SMDI copolymer and Green 5) is a light controlling spherical powder that obscures skin imperfections, hides fine lines and wrinkles and creates the illusion of surface smoothness. The clear coating on the outside of the sphere changes the angle in which light enters ChronoSphere Optical Brite. The focal point is then shifted into the center from the other edge of the silica bead, thus distorting the image captured by the viewer, according to Arch, which notes that the suggested use level is 1-10%.
Also at Supplier's Day, Arch is showcasing Metabiotics Resveratrol (INCI: Pichia/Resveratrol ferment extract)—which allows companies to formulate products with anti-aging, non-surgical microlifting, anti-inflammatory claims—as well as PhytoTerra Organic Baobab Oil (INCI: Adansonia digitata (Baobab) seed oil), which improves the moisture in hair and skin and rehydrates the skin to combat wrinkles.

Innospec’s Sulfate-Free Surfactant Delivers Dense Lather
2009-05-12 | 02:44
Iselux is less likely to induce skin irritation than SLS and SLES.
In the body wash category, luxurious lather sells. Along those lines, Innospec (Booth No. 922) has relaunched Iselux, its sulfate-free surfactant technology which is readily biodegradable, comes from renewable resources and delivers attributes consumers desire, such as great foam and great skin feel.
According to company officials, Isulex allows chemists to formulate structured liquids, and offers a number of advantages over existing commercial surfactants. For example, formulations will remain crystal clear while still allowing a dense rich foam and because it is sulfate-free it is milder to the skin. Tests have shown that over a cumulative 2-week period, Iselux is less likely to induce skin irritation than SLS and SLES.
At the same time, this surfactant technology ensures the cleaning product rinses away easily and is not sticky when dry, leaving the skin feeling smooth.
As an isethionate ester, it can be used as a primary or secondary surfactant, and according to Innospec it has been proven to be highly stable in formulations exposed to both high and low temperatures. It can be easily thickened with electrolytes when used in combination with the most common secondary surfactant. Innopsec also notes that compared to existing commercial technologies, Iselux has a low odor profile.

New Ingredients from Silab Boost Epidermal Barrier Function
2009-05-11 | 04:22
Two actives target essential metabolic pathways.
Visit Silab (Booth No. 827) to learn more about protecting the skin's barrier function.
According to Silab, the epidermal barrier function protects the body against external stresses and excessive water loss. Two metabolic pathways are particularly important in the maintenance of skin barrier function homeostasis: the lipid flow across the epidermis, which forms the inter-corneocyte lipid cement, and the cohesion of the upper layers of the epidermis by the tight junctions.
By developing two active ingredients targeting these two essential metabolic pathways for maintenance of a complete barrier function, Silab provides a natural solution which meets the current expectations of the cosmetics industry in the area of moisturizing and restructuring care products.
• Cohesium is an active ingredient which reinforces the cohesion of the upper layers of the epidermis by tightening the intercellular junctions, thus restructuring the barrier function.
• Pro-Lipiskin is an active ingredient which boosts all stages of the flow of epidermal lipids, thus restoring the lamellar lipid cement that forms the permeable barrier of the epidermis.

Granactive AR-1423 was screened in a leave-on cosmetic treatment at a 5% level on several subjects having excessive redness on their face. This cosmetic treatment, using the combination of Tetrapeptide-14 and botanicals, was effective at diminishing redness by 50% over the course of the 4 week study.

In other news, Grant Industries was recently awarded a patent on its Gransil EPSQ powder technology, leading to a new class of sponge-like cosmetics. Cosmetic grade polydimethylsiloxane and polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) are entwined in a process that produces a finely divided porous particle using interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) synthesis, which is not a simple mixture of two polymer materials.
The characteristic and physical properties of each individual network are changed, resulting in a new material with novel properties. In comparison with pure silicone elastomers, it features a drier, more slippery feel after being dispersed in cyclomethicone or low viscosity silicone fluids. In addition, it provides a higher oil absorption capacity and an increased compatibility with vegetable oils. Optimal performance is achieved when Gransil EPSQ is combined with low viscosity silicone or hydrocarbon fluids. It can be dispersed by sprinkling it into a fluid with vigorous mixing. Grant offers demo formulas on their website with excellent optical blurring effect for wrinkles and sebum absorption for matte finish for inclusion in unique “mousse” texture cosmetics.

Momentive's SilForm Flexible Resin for Personal Care
2009-05-11 | 04:07
Has applications in color cosmetics, sun care and anti-aging lotions.
Momentive’s new SilForm flexible resin will be among the breakthrough personal care solutions featured at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ 2009 Suppliers Day Conference, taking place May 12-13 at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, NJ. A film-forming, flexible resin that mimics the movement of skin for a comfortable, pliable feel, SilForm flexible resin has demonstrated great potential for applications such as color cosmetics, sun care formulations and anti-aging lotions, according to the company.
By offering strong non-transfer properties typically associated with silicone resins, SilForm flexible resin has demonstrated an improvement over traditional MQ resins, with greater flexibility and longer lasting overall comfort, according to Momentive. In addition, by minimizing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), SilForm flexible resin may allow personal care formulators to combat the drying and tightening of skin that is associated with traditional film formers. The material’s outstanding water and oil resistance also makes it an excellent choice to consider for lip care products.
“Consumers are increasingly demanding skin and sun care products that maintain suppleness, flexibility and a ‘just applied’ look and feel,” said Beatriz Blanco, global marketing manager, personal care, Momentive. “SilForm flexible resin can help provide comfort and long-lasting wearability in a wide range of personal care solutions, while reducing color transfer and maintaining moisture levels.”
Also new from Momentive is Silsoft* A+ conditioning agent which was
developed for potential use by personal care manufacturers in formulating
clear and opaque shampoos, conditioners, hair color and styling products for frizzy or damaged hair.
Based on patented silicone technology from Momentive, Silsoft A+
conditioning agent is a virtually surfactant-free emulsion that typically
demonstrates more effective deposition of conditioning agents on damaged
hair, compared to traditional amino silicones. This enhanced deposition can
translate to better performance for the same amount of ingredient,
potentially resulting in a significant cost-savings benefit for manufacturers, in addition to a higher level of consumer satisfaction. Silsoft A+ conditioning agent¹s proposed INCI designation is Polysilicone X (and) glycerin (and) DPG.
Silsoft A+ conditioning agent can measurably improve the fiber to fiber
alignment of hair, allowing hairs to remain parallel to each other and
resulting in a visibly smoother and shinier appearance. It can also improve
curl definition for curly hair and aid in moisture retention, according to Momentive.
