With the acquisition of National Starch complete, AkzoNobel offers the global personal care industry a wide range of formulating solutions for hair and skin care products.

For example, including AkzoNobel's Elfacos T212 liquid polymer in a hair conditioning formula achieves performance that is superior to a leading commercial formulation, according to the company. That's because Elfacos T212 is a polyalkylene glycol derivative which enhances the deposition of silicone onto hair fibers.

According to AkzoNobel, the conditioner formulas were evaluated on bleached European brown hair and performance was confirmed by surface-specific X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) analysis of the fibers.

Elfacos T212 is compatible with anionic, amphoteric, cationic and sugar-based surfactants common to hair conditioning and cleansing formulations. Wet comb panel tests verified the enhanced performance of a finished product when just a small amount of Elfacos T212 is added to a hair conditioning formulation.

According to Lipo, Gorgonian Extract is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient that is safe, effective, and
environmentally friendly. It is an extract from the marine organism Pseudopterogoria elisabethae (sea
whip), a renewable resource harvested from the Caribbean Sea, which consist primarily of powerful
anti-inflammatory compounds called pseudopterosins.

The anti-inflammatory properties of pseudopterosins are well documented in scientific literature, according to Lipo.
Pseudopterosins have been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators. This
activity has been assayed both in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro enzymatic assay measures inhibition
of phospholipase A2 (PLA2). This enzyme cleaves arachidonic acid from the cell membrane and
makes it available for enzymatic reactions and is the initial enzyme in the arachidonic pathway that
ultimately leads to the synthesis of eicosanoids, the inflammation mediators. These molecules play

In a study performed to learn the concentration-activity relationships of the pseudopterosin mixture in a unicellular aquatic cellular protist, tetrahymena, a direct correlation was demonstrated between the concentration of the mixture and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, the percentage of use in formulas will correlate with the activity needed to be achieved. ChronoSphere Optical Brite (INCI: Silicone and DMPA/isophthalic acid/SMDI copolymer and Green 5) is a light controlling spherical powder that obscures skin imperfections, hides fine lines and wrinkles and creates the illusion of surface smoothness. The clear coating on the outside of the sphere changes the angle in which light enters ChronoSphere Optical Brite. Along those lines, Innospec (Booth No. 922) has relaunched Iselux, its sulfate-free surfactant technology which is readily biodegradable, comes from renewable resources and delivers attributes consumers desire, such as great foam and great skin feel.

According to company officials, Isulex allows chemists to formulate structured liquids, and offers a number of advantages over existing commercial surfactants. For example, formulations will remain crystal clear while still allowing a dense rich foam and because it is sulfate-free it is milder to the skin. Tests have shown that over a cumulative 2-week period, Iselux is less likely to induce skin irritation than SLS and SLES.

At the same time, this surfactant technology ensures the cleaning product rinses away easily and is not sticky when dry, leaving the skin feeling smooth.

As an isethionate ester, it can be used as a primary or secondary surfactant, and according to Innospec it has been proven to be highly stable in formulations exposed to both high and low temperatures. (Booth No. 500B) has launched Granactive AR-1423, a unique delivery matrix that can be used in cosmetic treatments to alleviate the redness associated with red (rosacea-like) skin types or after mild sun exposure. It combines a redness diminishing peptide, along with the antioxidant properties of tea, the calming properties of boswellia serrata and the soothing quality of honey. Granactive AR-1423 contains Tetrapeptide-14, a specific peptide sequence (designed by Grant's supply partner Helix Biomedix). It acts by down-regulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) to prevent inflammation, which in turn reduces MMP-1 damage with the net effect of a bright and even skin appearance.

Cosmetic grade polydimethylsiloxane and polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) are entwined in a process that produces a finely divided porous particle using interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) synthesis, which is not a simple mixture of two polymer materials.

The characteristic and physical properties of each individual network are changed, resulting in a new material with novel properties. In comparison with pure silicone elastomers, it features a drier, more slippery feel after being dispersed in cyclomethicone or low viscosity silicone fluids. In addition, it provides a higher oil absorption capacity and an increased compatibility with vegetable oils. Optimal performance is achieved when Gransil EPSQ is combined with low viscosity silicone or hydrocarbon fluids. It can be dispersed by sprinkling it into a fluid with vigorous mixing. Momentive’s new SilForm flexible resin will be among the breakthrough personal care solutions featured at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ 2009 Suppliers Day Conference, taking place May 12-13 at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, NJ. A film-forming, flexible resin that mimics the movement of skin for a comfortable, pliable feel, SilForm flexible resin has demonstrated great potential for applications such as color cosmetics, sun care formulations and anti-aging lotions, according to the company.

By offering strong non-transfer properties typically associated with silicone resins, SilForm flexible resin has demonstrated an improvement over traditional MQ resins, with greater flexibility and longer lasting overall comfort, according to Momentive.
