The Society of Cosmetic Chemists will hold its Annual Scientific Seminar on June 3rd and 4th at the Long Island Marriott located in Uniondale, New York. This is the first Seminar to be hosted by the chapters in Area I including Connecticut, Long Island, New England, New York and Quebec. The Seminar’s Technical Program was arranged by the Committee on Scientific Affairs which is chaired this year by Jim Vlasic, Greenway Research Lab. The Seminar will begin on Thursday morning with Session A – Green, which will be moderated by Dr. Mindy Goldstein. The session will open with a Keynote Presentation from John Warner, Ph.D., Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry. This will be the Society’s first Henry Maso Keynote Award Lecture created to honor Maso, a long time SCC Member andcolleague who passed away in 2009. Dr. Warner will present “Green Cosmetic Chemistry.” Other featured papers include Bruce Uhlman, BASF Corporation,presenting “Measuring Sustainability and Integration into Strategic Decision Making;” Gilles Pauly , Ph.D., Cognis France,presenting “Beyond Sustainability: A Pioneering Tripartite Approach to Corporate Social Responsibility;” Paula Lennon, Ph.D., Gattefosse France, presenting “Improved Sensorial Performance in Natural Formulations Using Polyglycerol Modified Plant Waxes” andOliver Thum, Ph.D., Evonik Goldschmidt GmbH,presenting “Process Innovations for Sustainable Biocatalytic Esterification.” Session B – Hair on Thursday afternoon will be moderated by Randy Wickett, Ph.D., University of Cincinnati.This session will include a Keynote presentation from Jennifer Marsh, Ph.D., Procter & Gamble,entitled “New Product Design Strategies for Colored Hair.” Additional presentations include: “Study of Emulsion Structure (Liquid Crystals): Performance Correlation in Hair Straightening Formulas,” Timothy Gao, Ph.D., Croda, Inc.; “Hair Growth Modulation, Up or Down: A Review of Ways to Influence the Biological Events in the Hair Follicle,” Karl Lintner, Ph.D., Sederma S.A.S.; “Energizing the Hair Follicle: Modulation of Hair Follicle Components,” Paul Mouser, Ph.D., International Specialty Products; and “Quantifying and Modeling the Propensity for Hair Breakage,”Trefor Evans, Ph.D., TRI-Princeton. On Friday morning, Barbara Wolf, Ph.D., Estée Lauder Companies, will moderate Session C – Formulations.Betsy Schmalz Ferguson will give the Keynote presentation “Another Interesting Year: How Do You Unravel Consumers to Reveal Opportunities?” Historical, psychological and global trend perspectives will be reviewed.Other featured presentations include “Complex Effect Pigments: The Challenge of Formulating with Pigments of Diverse Optical and Physical Properties,” Gabriel Uzunian, BASF Corporation; “Surface Treatments to Improve Pigment Dispersion in Aqueous Media,” Jane Hollenberg, Gelest, Inc.; and “Luster Measurements of Lip Glosses,” Santosh Yadav, Ph.D., International Specialty Products. Martha Tate, Ph.D., Kimberly-Clark Corporation, will moderate the final session, Session D – Dermatology and Cosmetology.Dr. Zoe Diana Draelos will be the Keynote Speakerpresenting a paper on “Moving Line of Drug Activity.” Additional presentations will include “Stimulation of Extracellular Matrix Proteins by UV and Monochromatic Red Light in the Presence of Optically Responsive Powders,” Vince Gruber, Ph.D., Arch Personal Care Products; “A New Lipoaminoacid Able to Restore Aging-Induced Modifications in Biomechanical Properties of Human Dermal Fibroblasts and in Functional Properties of Preadipocytes,” Carla Perez, Seppic; “Skincare Application for a Novel Cyclopeptide,” Howard Epstein, Ph.D., EMD Chemicals, Inc. and “Beneficial Regulation of Expression of Extracellular Matrix Proteins and Transforming Growth Factor-β in Dermal Fibroblasts and Epidermal Keratinocytes by Polypodium Leucotomos” – Neena Philips, Ph.D., Fairleigh Dickinson University. The Committee on Scientific Affairs has also arranged four Mini-Breakfast Seminars, two on Thursday and two on Friday mornings from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m.The informal nature of these mini-breakfasts allows the opportunity for give and take, questions and answers.COSA Mini-Breakfasts are limited to 30 participants. Scheduled topics include “Image Analysis Techniques for Cosmetic Science” presented by Roger McMullen, Ph.D., International Specialty Products and “Color and Cosmetic Colorants: An Overview” presented by Rahul Ranade, Ph.D., Sensient Cosmetic Technologies) on Thursday morning and “Sunscreen Photostability” presented by Craig Bonda, HallStar and “Aquaporins and Tight Junctions in the Epidermis” presented by Randy Wickett, Ph.D., University of Cincinnati on Friday morning. The SCC’s Continuing Education Program will offer “Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry” instructed by Perry Romanowski and “Formulating for the Natural Market” instructed by Arthur Georgalas on Wednesday, June 2nd. Space is limited and there are separate registration fees for the Mini-Breakfasts and the Education courses. The Annual Scientific Seminar will once again feature the Student Poster Exhibit.D-D ChemCo will sponsor Awards for Best Student Posters.There will be first place ($800), second place ($600), third place ($400) and fourth place ($200) awards.The Student Poster Award Sponsored by D-D ChemCo will be judged by COSA members and presented at the Friday Business Luncheon on June 4th.Students interested in presenting posters at this Seminar should contact the SCC National Office. The Suppliers’ Cocktail Reception will be held on Thursday evening, June 3rd at the Long Island Marriott. This event is always a highlight of the Annual Seminar. Registration fees will be $600.00 for members registering prior to and including May 7th and $650.00 after the 7th.Fees for non-members will be $720.00, prior to and including May 7th and $770.00 for those registering after that date.Split registration will be $700.00 for members, $800.00 for non-members prior to and including May 7th.After the 7th, the fees will be $750 for members and $850 for non-members. There will be no one day registration fees for the Annual Seminar. On-Site Registration fees will be higher for those individuals registering at the Seminar.
