The “hygiene hypothesis” is not justified in blaming cleaning and hygiene for an increase in allergies according to a study by London-based International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH). The IFH reported “no evidence that cleaning habits prevalent today are to blame” and “firmly dispels the notion that we are living in super-clean, germ-free homes.” The report revealed infection remains a major cause of mortality globally. “In very simple terms, good hygiene saves lives,” said Ernie Rosenberg, president and chief executive officer, Soap and Detergent Association (SDA), Washington, DC.
