CEQ Chair, SARS Update Featured at SDA Fall Meeting

The chairman of the President’s Council on Environmental Quality and an update on the government’s battle against SARS are among the program highlights scheduled for The Soap and Detergent Association’s fall meeting, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2003 in Washington, D.C. The meeting is open to all members of SDA, and will take place at the Loews L’Enfant Plaza Hotel. Besides meetings of SDA’s expert standing committees, the program will include:

o A keynote luncheon address by James L. Connaughton, chairman of the President’s Council on Environmental Quality, Wednesday, October 1. Mr. Connaughton, the senior environmental advisor to the President, will speak about the Bush Administration’s priorities on environmental regulation.

o SDA’s public policy briefing, which will include presentations on the federal government’s response to SARS, a new public database on cleaning product ingredients, and a draft Environmental Protection Agency guide for ‘green’ cleaning product purchases. The briefing on Oct. 1 will feature: Dr. Arthur Liang, co-leader of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) SARS Community Outreach Team; an update on a new online Household Ingredient Product database from the National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine and Allan Abramson, director of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Pollution Prevention Division.

o “What’s In Store for 2004?” Chuck Todd, Editor-in-Chief of The Hotline, Washington’s premier daily briefing on American politics, will give SDA members a preview of the upcoming 2004 election season on Tuesday evening, Sept. 30. He has worked for more than 10 years at The Hotline or one of its affiliates.

o SDA “Icebreaker”: SDA members can travel to DC’s MCI Arena and watch an NHL exhibition hockey game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals on the evening of October 1.
