Spooky season is in full swing, and makeup is all the hype. Specifically, lip gloss … and the ones that roll on and change color. So much, in fact, that they're currently the top-growing trends in makeup searches in the US, according to market research firm Spate.

Color Changing Lip Gloss

Color changing lip gloss is experiencing a +129.6% (year over year) YoY growth and an average of 1.5K monthly searches. The top growing related keywords are “pH” and “mood.” Searches for “pH” alongside “color changing lip gloss” reveal that consumers are interested in products that transform based on personal chemistry. Searches for “mood color-changing lip gloss” indicate consumers’ interest in a novel product format. While Tarte Cosmetics is the sole market leader, Spate analysts say there’s ample room for new players to glide through the space.

Rollerball Lip Gloss

Millennials who remember appreciating the feel and smell of rolling on strawberry-scented rollerball lip gloss in grade school, it’s yet another Y2K trend making a comeback in beauty.

With a +56.7% YoY growth and an average of 2.6K average monthly searches, there are three market leaders: Inc., Redible and Beauty Treats. With very low competition, this emerging trend emphasizes the opportunity for brands to establish a well, glossy presence in the space. How? Keep an eye out for formats in lip products.
