House Committee Approves H.R. 2576

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has approved H.R. 2576, the Toxic Substances Control Act Modernization Act, by a vote of 47-0, with one abstention.
 
The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates(SOCMA) applauded the committee for its continued bipartisan effort in moving forward the legislative, which marks the most major reform to the nation's chemical control laws since the Toxic Substances Control Act was enacted in 1976.

“SOCMA commends Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL) and Ranking Member Paul Tonko (D-NY) for their bipartisan leadership to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act,” said William E. Allmond, SOCMA Vice President of Government and Public Relations. “This legislation is a remarkable improvement over current law because it improves the parts of TSCA most stakeholders agree have badly fallen short, while maintaining areas of the statute that have worked well.

“We now encourage the full House of Representatives to quickly pass this important legislation that will not only help restore public confidence in our nation's chemical control laws and the everyday products made possible by specialty chemical manufacturers, but will also serve as a model for improving other nations' chemical risk management programs,” Allmond said.

SOCMA will continue to work with members of both parties in the House and Senate to move TSCA reform legislation forward and ensure that the voice of specialty chemical manufacturers continues to be heard as negotiations continue. “After years of failed attempts, Congress is just steps away from making TSCA reform a reality,” Allmond said.
