L’Oreal Acquires BioMedic Brand

L’Oreal S.A. today announced the signing of an agreement with CosMedic Concepts, Inc. whereby L’Oreal USA, Inc., L’Oreal’s wholly owned U.S. subsidiary would, acquire its BioMedic brand, product line and related assets. The transaction is expected to close within a couple of months.

Located in Phoenix, AZ, BioMedic was founded in 1990 by Cristina Carlino and David Watson and specializes in non-prescription skin care and clinical procedure products designed for use by plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Biomedic carries over 60 products, which are sold directly to patients by more than 1,500 physicians in the U.S.

In 2000, BioMedic had sales of $13 million, with North America accounting for more than 80% of sales. Its products are distributed in more than 25 countries.

“This acquisition will reinforce L’Oreal’s portfolio of products in the field of dermocosmetics and will accelerate our development in this rapidly growing market,” said Guy Peyrelongue, president and CEO of L’Oreal USA.

BioMedic will join with La Roche-Posay in the active cosmetics division under the leadership of Philip Shearer, president of L’Oreal USA’s luxury products division. Ms. Carlino and Mr. Watson will continue to be actively involved as consultants in the development of the business.
