L’Oréal Paris Releases 2021 Sustainability Progress Report

Establishes a 10-year plan pledging to reduce beauty product's carbon footprint.

On the tail of World Environment Day, L’Oréal Paris released its 2021 progress report dedicated to the brand’s sustainability commitments, highlighting its latest improvements as well as a full review of the “L’Oréal For the Future, Because our Planet is Worth it” program.

Building on the Group's progress, the brand has established a 10-year plan pledging to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint of its products sold by half by 2030, as well as invest 10 million Euros in the next five years into environmental projects that will protect and restore biodiversity, as well as supporting local communities – especially women.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Product Developments

L’Oréal Paris is taking action to improve the environmental and social footprint of every new and reimagined product. Each of these improvements is driven by 21 Research and Innovation centers around the world, which are dedicated to exploring new scientific ground (like biofermentation, biotechnology and agronomy) to develop safe and effective beauty formulas that are more respectful of the environment and biodiversity, using less water and more sustainable ingredients. For example, the hyaluronic acid found in L’Oréal Paris’ Revitalift Pure HA Serum is sustainably produced. Lactic bacteria work as “mini fermentation factories”; L'Oréal Paris feeds them with locally sourced cereals before extracting them through a green process, obtaining two molecular weights: macro- and micro-fragmented hyaluronic acids.

Sustainable Packaging

The L’Oréal Paris Product Development and Packaging teams are also focused on designing smaller and lighter packaging, integrating more recycled materials. The brand is accelerating its transition to circular economy by optimizing its packaging. The priority is to reduce the use of plastic, by committing to recycled materials to effectively get rid of virgin plastic in the brand’s packaging by 2030. By using recycled plastics in the Elvive range’s packaging, L’Oréal Paris saved the equivalent of 10,400 tons of virgin plastic.
