Nearly half of North American consumers experience tooth sensitivity and there is more attention to children’s products with mild/gen- tle formulations. Additionally, the overall trend for natural claims is prevalent in personal care and is extending to oral care as well.
Consumers are more discerning with their choices and want high performance solutions containing natural or naturally- sourced ingredients. When it comes to surfactant selection and performance, BASF’s COSMOS-approved alkyl polyglucosides (APG®) offer a mild and gentle solution, without compromising sensory benefits.
BASF offers several APGs that are based on renewable, plant- derived feedstocks. They have good foaming characteristics yet are still gentle for application in sensitive or mild formulations and are ideal for sulfate-free systems.
Plantapon® LGC SORB - INCI: Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate (and) Lauryl Glucoside - is an anionic APG surfac- tant that combines the characteristic mildness of APG with ex- cellent foaming and sensory properties.
Plantaren® 1200 N UP - INCI: Lauryl Glucoside - is a mild, non- ionic APG surfactant sourced from renewable, plant-derived feedstocks. It is perfectly suited for gentle and natural-oriented oral care concepts.
Plantaren® 818 UP - INCI: Coco Glucoside, and Plantaren® 2000 N UP - INCI: Decyl Glucoside - are also non-ionic APG surfactants and are suited for gentle, natural-oriented oral care concepts.
FOAM ANALYSIS EXPERIMENTS:
BASF conducted a detailed study to evaluate the foam prop- erties of several of its APGs. The objective of this study was to evaluate foaming characteristics of BASF’s APGs using a sulfate-based surfactant as a positive control. All samples evaluated in this study were diluted by water to make a 1% solution. The pH of the solutions was adjusted to be uniform for all samples. The solutions were then evaluated by the Dynamic Foam Analyzer (DFA).
