Q: What are the processing challenges of cosmetic manufacturers who come to Hockmeyer?
A: High productivity, quick batch turnovers, safety, and repeatable results are the main challenges. Manufacturers are looking for efficient, safe, hygienic, and operator-friendly equipment for their mixing & milling needs. Historically, the industry has relied on horizontal and three-roll mills for pigment milling for nail polish and lipstick applications and these machines can make it difficult to obtain consistent color results, gloss development, and viscosity. We overcome these challenges with the Hockmeyer (HCP) Immersion Mill. It provides consistent results and offers flexibility for batch sizes, viscosity ranges, and ease of cleanup.
Q: What attracts cosmetic companies to use Hockmeyer’s equipment in their manufacturing facility?
A: Enhanced efficiency and productivity for their facilities. Hockmeyer has a reputation for making highly efficient and reliable machines that are easy to use and provide our customers with repeatable results. Our machines are also easy to clean, wear parts are readily available, and we provide clients with operator training and ongoing post-sale support.
Q: Which Hockmeyer model is most used for processing cosmetic products?
A: That would be our HCPS Immersion Mill. It is the most versatile Hockmeyer mill designed for high viscosity applications. It handles viscosity ranging from med viscosity nail polish pigment concentrates up to high viscosity lipstick pastes. The Sweep Blade is easy to attach or remove depending on product type.
Q: On your website, www.hockmeyer.com, customers can inquire about your Lab Testing services. How can potentional customers get started with the testing process?
A: Typically, the Lab receives testing inquiries directly from our website or through a Hockmeyer sales representative. When a customer wants to schedule a test trial, we set up a brief introductory conversation to understand the application, their current process, and the test goal. We'll ask questions about their formula, batch volumes, QC specs, viscosity, and what they're looking to achieve. This information helps us determine the best equipment setup and how much time will be needed to complete the test(s). That initial discussion helps build rapport with the client and establish a personal relationship before exchanging sensitive information.
Q: What information should customers prepare to share with Hockmeyer’s Lab Technicians during their Customer Trial?
A: We encourage customers to share their formulation and process with us so we can give advice to improve processing efficiency and product development. Customers are required to provide their mill size, process time, batch volume, media size and type, and necessary QC requirements when they send us the Customer Testing Information form. The more information they provide to us upfront, the more prepared we are for testing and the more options for solutions we can offer.
Q: What other Hockmeyer machines can assist in manufacturing cosmetic products?
A: Multi-shaft mixers (HHL series) are excellent choices for high viscosity cosmetic applications that don’t require milling. Many clients have used the HHL series machines to produce topical creams and lotions, UV-cured nail gel coats, and hair care products. We’ve also helped clients solve air entrapment issues using our NEXGENTM Vacuum Recirculation Mill; achieving an airless, homogeneous dispersion in record time.
Q: With COVID-19 – what measures does Hockmeyer take to keep their customers and Lab Technicians safe?
A: Before arriving at our Customer Testing Laboratory, customers must fill out a COVID Questionnaire. The answers they provide ensure that no one brings COVID into our facility. We perform daily temperature screenings, require face masks, and limit testing to 2 attendees per customer trial for social distancing purposes.
