Cosmetic scientist Dr. Shuting Hu of Acaderma weighs in on keeping healthy.

By now you’ve been bombarded with all about the importance of actively washing your hands and how to protect yourself from COVID-19, but what about your everyday products?

Cosmetic scientist, Dr. Shuting Hu of Acaderma, an expert in both science and beauty on five tips to keep you and your product babies safe—the key is remembering the best protection begins before even touching your everyday products:

Step 1: Set a “contamination zone” near your front door where you’ll leave your jackets, shoes, purses before entering.

Step 2: Wash your hands for 20 seconds immediately upon entering and sterilize all you brought in to the “clean zone” (like your cell phone!) to prevent further spread into your beauty cabinet!

Step 3: Sterilize beauty package surfaces and containers with 60% or higher alcohol before opening and applying to your face.

Step 4: If you’re worried about the content inside—for example, you didn’t wash your hands, then opened the jar and touched the cream—leave it untouched for several days before the next use (the virus cannot survive on its own for a long period of time after leaving human contact).

Step 5: Repeat these steps until the all-clear is given.
