Viscosity modifiers play a major role in the sensory experience of the user when it comes to shampoos as well as hair styling products. However, choosing the right ingredients can be difficult with evolving regulations and the demand from consumers for more bio-based alternatives. Xanthan gum is a naturally occurring, biodegradable polymer with qualities uniquely suited for numerous hair care applications. With xanthan gum, formulators can meet the requirements for natural shampoos without a negative impact on product performance. We will demonstrate the benefits and versatility of xanthan gum by highlighting its effectiveness in both a sulfate-free shampoo and styling product.

    Discussion Points:

Xanthan Gum’s Unique Chemistry and Benefits

    • Fermentation-derived, with a unique chemical structure.
    • Excellent compatibility with a multitude of ingredients including salts and surfactants.
    • Biodegradable and well suited for natural cosmetic formulations.

Xanthan Gum in Hair Care Applications

    • Sulfate-Free Shampoo—There is a growing need for sugar-based/sulfate-free surfactants in cleansing products and xanthan gum shows very good stability to such surfactants. A unique grade of xanthan gum showing reduced psuedoplastic properties can work well with these sulfate-free surfactants while still providing a similar sensory experience to other traditional thickeners.
    • Hair Styling Product – We will demonstrate that it is possible to replace synthetic thickeners and styling polymers in a hair gel.

Skin care is the leading category in the natural preservatives market. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, preservation has become a discussion topic; namely, natural preservation and its efficacy. In addition, trends like the language shift from “natural” to “sustainable” have affected the way consumers evaluate personal care preservation.

While feel and sensory remain important to the consumer when purchasing personal care products, the need/want for effective and safe ingredients is driving consumer behavior. The term “effective” is paving the way for new formulations. As consumers flock to products that are proven to work, backed by science, preservation chemistry will be top of mind. Acme-Hardesty offers a solution to preservation challenges through our partnership with Sharon Laboratories and their green, new ingredients.

In this webinar, we will explore the challenges of finding the right preservation system and how to incorporate green preservative technologies into formulation while maintaining efficacy.

    Ingredient Highlights:

    • SharoSENSE™ Plus 181 N - Combines the best features of natural ingredients, with the safety, quality, and consistency of the lab.
    • Sharomix™ Amplify Line - Offers broad spectrum and superior activity, allowing a significantly lower level of use in a finished product of ~ 0.5%. LESS preservative delivers MORE protection.
    • Biosecur® Natural Organic Personal Care - Provides excellent antimicrobial protection, effective in wide pH range, and is a certified organic preservative.

    Speakers:

    • Caren Dres-Hajeski Business Unit Director – Personal Care
    • Rishabh Shah Director of Technical Services – Personal Care
