Rob Gronkowski, the loveable, future Hall of Fame tight end for the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots, hung up his cleats in March after nine grueling years in the NFL. Widely-regarded as the greatest tight end in NFL history, Gronk, as he is affectionately known, retired with 16 NFL records—many of them set on the sport’s greatest stage, the Super Bowl.
With the NFL regular season fast approaching, what is Gronk up to these days? Unlike other football retirees, he’s not headed to the announcing booth or writing a book…he’s hawking cannabidiol-based products. This week, Gronkowski began shilling for CBDMedic, a maker of pain-relief and skin care products based on a wide variety of traditional ingredients like menthol, eucalyptus, jojoba and tea tree. He is the official spokesperson for a line of products that is billed as the first family of OTC topical medications combining active pharmaceutical ingredients blended with CBD hemp extract and other natural emollients. The line is available online and in CVS.
On the CBDMedic website, Gronkowski proclaims “I’ve had nine record-breaking seasons and nine separate surgeries, but now, for the first time in more than a decade, I’m pain-free. And that’s a BIG deal.”
Rob, it’s not the CBD that’s making you feel great; it’s the fact that you haven’t had a linebacker, cornerback and free safety trying to drive you into the ground since the Pats won the Super Bowl on February 3. R&R will do that…CBD won’t.
What CBD may do, however, is spell the end of any chance of a Gronk comeback. The NFL recently formed a committee to explore medical marijuana’s potential as a pain management tool for players, but players who test positive for pot still face suspension. And, like many other US sports, the NFL bans teams and players from using cannabis products or getting involved in marijuana-based business deals. CBD may be THC-free, but the stuff is still banned under this policy. For nearly a decade nobody could stop Gronk, but his latest move might keep him on the sidelines. Then there’s the issue of Gronk’s deal with Procter & Gamble, where he’s been the spokesman for Tide Pods for more than a year. No word yet, but we can’t imagine a conservative, middle America-type company like P&G being pleased that its Tide spokesman is tied up with CBD.
