Lush Cosmetics is handing out leaflets, showing videos and even dressing as pirates in support of Sea Shepherd, the self-styled "eco-pirates."
Lush is also giving all the proceeds of a new "shark fin" soap to the campaign to save sharks around the world. The British beauty retailer is following in the footsteps of the Body Shop in getting involved in environmental activities.
However Sea Shepherd is a more controversial outfit that has been disowned by other environmental activists. In contrast to Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd activists endorse a deliberate policy of sinking or sabotaging vessels they believe have violated international whaling laws.
As a result, Greenpeace has officially disavowed any connection to Sea Shepherd.
However Andrew Butler, campaigns manager at Lush, said the organization was proud to be associated with Sea Shepherd. He insisted that 90% of the world's shark population has already been wiped out.
In the past Lush has teamed up with Plane Stupid, the controversial environmental movement to campaign against the expansion of the airline industry and Reprieve UK, the human rights organization in a campaign to close down the US detention camp Guantanamo Bay.
