EMD Chemicals, Merck Celebrate Milestones
Pigments have evolved significantly over the last 50 years. EMD Chemicals and its global affiliate, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, are celebrating two important milestones this year: a 50th anniversary in the effect pigment industry and 30 years of manufacturing pigments in EMD’s Savannah, GA facility.

Through the acquisition of the Rona Pearl division (bismuth oxide chloride pigments and natural fish silver) from the Whittaker Corporation in the U.S. in 1975, the company took its first step into the most important cosmetics market in the world. To gain market proximity, five years later, in 1980, a facility was established in Savannah, GA for production, research and application technology.
Today, EMD Chemicals and Merck represent a leading manufacturer of decorative and functional effect pigments used in printing, plastics, cosmetics, coatings, electrical conductivity, laser marking and energy management as well as brand and product protection.
Murad Inducted into AIA’s Academy of Legends
Dr. Howard Murad, founder of Murad, Inc., has been inducted into the Aesthetic International Association’s Academy of Legends. The AIA Academy of Legends honors aesthetic professionals who have advanced the profession for more than 20 years with dedicated service and exemplary contributions. With the Academy of Legends, the AIA aims to raise the standards of education and public awareness of the aesthetics industry.

First ‘Match’ in NPF’s Healthy Match Program
The Natural Products Foundation (NPF) has the first “match” in its new Healthy Match, a program aimed at connecting community health programs that are feeling the strain of the current economic climate with natural product companies willing to donate products. The program’s first beneficiary is the Sarasota Community Medical Clinic, which offers a variety of health care services to the uninsured and financially needy throughout Sarasota County, FL. Donations are coming from Aubrey Organics as well as Carlson Nutritional Supplements, Now Foods and Franklyn BioScience.
To date, seven additional community health programs across the country are participating in the project: No Aids Task Force, New Orleans, LA.; Leahy Clinic for the Uninsured, Scranton, PA.; Erie Family Health Center, Chicago, IL; West Side Community Health Services, St. Paul, MN; Creating Health Institute, Spokane, WA; Fourth Street Clinic, Salt Lake City, UT and North by Northeast Clinic, Portland, OR.

Grand Brands To Roll Out More Products
Lander, which has been re-launched by Grand Brands, is set to expand. The company will launch a second phase of products, including new adult shampoo and conditioner, kid’s dental rinse and new additions to Lander adult oral care and skin care lines.
Evonik Expands Partnership with Glenn Corporation
Evonik Goldschmidt Corp. has expanded Glenn Corp.’s territory as its exclusive distributor of organic and silicone-based specialty ingredients for the personal care industry. The new agreement expands the firm’s current arrangement from 17 states to 22 states, including Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia.
Solabia Opens Solabia USA Inc.
The Solabia Group, a French manufacturer of cosmetic, nutraceutical, biotechnological and pharmaceutical raw materials, has opened a subsidiary and logistics platform in New York, operating as Solabia USA Inc. For the cosmetic industry, the group will expand the development of its technologies in biotechnology, fine chemistry, plant extraction and macro-encapsulation. The group produces polysaccharides and oligosaccharides, oligopeptides, ceramide-like analogs, mineral derivatives (L-pyrrolidone carboxylic acid salts), and a wide variety of Ecocert compliant standardized plant extracts. In the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and biotechnology sectors, the Solabia Group intends to exploit its multiple production sites that address key areas of risk mitigation and manufacturing capacity.

In honor of National Sun Safety Week, which was June 1-7, La Roche-Posay donated hundreds of units of Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream with SPF 15 to The Skin Cancer Foundation, which distributes them in communities across the country.

CPL Aromas Announces LCF Design Winners
CPL Aromas has announced the winners of its competition in which students of the London College of Fashion (LCF) create new images that can be used in a variety of company promotional materials.
Students were given a specific design brief from the CPL’s marketing team to come up with innovative and inspiring images that are in keeping with the company’s image and can be used in a commercial application. Prizes were awarded to Matjaz Tancic for underwater photographs, which will be used by CPL Aromas in an upcoming advertising campaign. and Shiva Hajiebrahimaraghi for a collection of floral images that will soon be used to adorn some of CPL’s promotional materials and packaging.
