"We compiled this list using the Sunscreen Guide’s price range feature for green-rated products, which provides a relative rating of a product’ suggested retail price per fluid ounce. We then checked the in-store availability of the least expensive products throughout the country using online store finder tools for Target, Walmart, Walgreens and CVS," said EWG in a press statement.
These eight products, which range from $10 to $20, have high EWG ratings and are available at many mainstream retailers and big box stores:
Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Lotion Sunscreen, SPF 50
Babyganics Mineral-Based Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50+
Bare Republic Clearscreen Sunscreen Gel, Sport, SPF 30
Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Baby, SPF 50
Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Baby, SPF 30+
CeraVe Baby Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 45
Goddess Garden Organics Facial Natural Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30
Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen, SPF 50.
Each year, EWG touts the UV protection products it likes best, but industry groups, including the Personal Care Product Council, note that the NGO's list is falsely alarming and may make consumers avoid the use of sunscreen on themselves and their children. With skin cancer rates still climbing, PCPC and others say the alarmist list may cause more harm than good.
