According to Rossetti, microwounding as a method in aesthetic dermatology was first introduced in the early 20th Century. Since then, new techniques such as needling, dermabrasion and laser resurfacing have been developed to stimulate new growth and healing in the skin. Clinically, microneedling has demonstrated improvements in wrinkles, fine lines and scarring. Interest in alternative needle technology as a means of delivering vaccines and medication led to expansion of the field. Solid, hollow, coated and dissolvable microneedles have all been investigated to penetrate the skin barrier and facilitate delivery of actives. The newest innovations in cosmetic microneedling combine the tissue regeneration capabilities, inherent to the mechanical action, with biocompatible dissolvable needles which allow actives to pass into the skin.
