Chanel Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld died today. He was 85. The company said that his long-time, right-hand woman, Virginie Viard, will succeed him as creative director.
The fashion industry widely credits Lagerfeld with bringing the House of Chanel back to life when he accepted an offer to be artistic director at Chanel in 1983.
"When I took on Chanel, it was a sleeping beauty. Not even a beautiful one. She snored," he said in "Lagerfeld Confidential," a 2007 documentary. "So I was to revive a dead woman."
The move invigorated Kagerfeld, too, elevating him to an infinitely higher fashion sphere, and transformed both their fortunes, noted CNN.
