Croda International Plc welcomed the FDA proposed update to regulatory requirements for sunscreens in the US that would reclassify titanium dioxide (TiO2) and ZnO (zinc oxide) as Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective category I (GRASE I). Previously none of the 16 currently marketed active ingredients were considered GRASE, this new update would help to eliminate confusion among sunscreen formulators and consumers alike with the new assessment of these mineral-based sunscreen active ingredients, according to Croda.
The proposed FDA reclassification of TiO2 and ZnO to GRASE category I, would label them as satisfying three criteria to be designated as safe and effective for their intended use. This would mean that no other data is required for them to be used in sunscreen formulations. This proposed update on safe and effective ingredients in sunscreens, helps, both formulators and consumers cut through all the ambiguity in the marketplace, and clearly identifies metal oxide technology as a preferred route to safe and effective UV protection.
“We have seen the sun care market moving towards titanium dioxide and zinc oxide for some time now," said Helene Hine, marketing manager,Croda Personal Care - Beauty Effects. "This has been largely driven by consumers’ desire to move away from chemical sunscreens, which use petro-derived ingredients, and more toward mineral-based sunscreens. Croda welcomes this news that further confirms the safety of these invaluable ingredients, no matter what the particle size. In addition, being globally approved, this opens up new possibilities for formulators and brands in all markets of the world to meet the needs of today’s consumers.”
Croda offers a range of metal oxide dispersions and powders under the Solaveil brand. The Solaveil Clarus range of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide actives possess a tightly controlled particle size distribution ensuring these provide a true transparency on the skin whilst maintaining excellent UV protection. The award-winning Solaveil SpeXtra range of titanium dioxide products uniquely allows for formulating high SPF, broad spectrum sun protection products using a single active ingredient. The Solaveil dispersions are available with different carrier fluids for formulation versatility and our powders offer formulators alternatives when dry actives are needed, making these Solaveil metal oxide technologies very easy to use in wide range of personal care applications.
