Dow and the Erb Institute of University of Michigan are joining forces again to host the second annual Elements of Sustainability Series from April 22 to 26, 2019. Building on last year’s successful inaugural series, this year’s daily, free lectures from five renowned academics center on the theme “Learning What’s Possible” and address foundational sustainability topics, including supply chain responsibility, effective risk communication and circular economy.
“Businesses are run by groups of individuals who make decisions every day, including decision at home. The cumulative result of those decisions have an impact in the world,” said Erica Ocampo, sustainability strategy manager at Dow Consumer Solutions and organizer of the lecture series. “To solve pressing sustainability challenges, people who make daily purchases of services and goods for companies or as individuals, need to better understand fundamentals of sustainability. Our goal is to facilitate conversation, encourage collaboration and equip everyone with the knowledge they need to successfully adopt sustainable practices at work and at home.”
Lectures will be shared online each day at 3 pm Eastern Time and will provide expert insights on topics including:

- April 22: Responsible Operations and Supply Chain Management presented by Dr. Ravi Anupindi, University of Michigan
- April 23: Chemicals in Our Environment: Perceptions, Hazards and Risks presented by Dr. Keith Solomon, University of Guelph
- April 24: Circular Economy and Industrial Ecology: Closing the Loops Along the Value Chain presented by Dr. Marian Chertow, Yale University
- April 25: Communicating Risks to Support Sustainability Discussions in a Post-Truth Era presented by Dr. Lianne Lefsrud, University of Alberta
- April 26: Sustainability Certifications and Public Policy presented by Dr. Tom Lyon, University of Michigan.
“The Erb Institute has a long history of educating University of Michigan students about the importance of taking sustainability within business seriously. We have collaborated with Dow to deliver sustainability expertise to a broader audience through this lecture series,” said Erb Institute Faculty Director Dr. Joe Árvai. “We hope this series empowers established and emerging business leaders to create and implement sustainability initiatives within their organizations, and to broaden their understanding of critical sustainability issues.”
