The death of George Floyd touched a nerve with millions of Americans and people around the world. Demonstrations in major US cities and small towns across America have been taking place for more than a week. Executives in the household and personal products industry have responded with messages of their own.

I have the privilege of leading a wonderful team here at ACI. Before making any public statements on the unrest in front of us, I thought it was critical to talk with, hear, listen to and understand what is in the hearts and minds of our staff. Change doesn’t happen by working alone. Change happens by working together with new people and new ways of doing things. I think one of many steps is for the association community to become an active ally. As a team we have begun to think about how we can help ACI see its role and be part of a meaningful solution.
Part of the dialogue we’ll be having with our team in the coming days is identifying which organizations we can partner with that can affect positive actions in seeking justice and equality for all. In my neighborhood in the middle of Washington D.C., I’ve seen a lot of broken glass these past few days. However, I’ve taken a lot of time to reflect and think about what it means to thoughtfully turn broken glass into a beautiful mosaic. You make that transformation by thousands of pieces coming together to make something better.
We’ve already seen companies throughout the cleaning product supply chain stepping up and expressing their commitments to come together with organizations determined to make a difference. ACI will amplify those voices and will proactively work with our member companies to do the hard work to create that mosaic.
Steve Caldeira, president and CEO, Household & Commercial Products Association
The senseless deaths of George Floyd, and so many others, have further exposed the racial inequalities that still exist in America.
This harrowing time is an opportunity to reflect on the values of equality and justice that we hold so close to our hearts, and ask what each of us can do—both individually and collectively—to support change for the communities that carry the burden of inequality.
The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) has always been committed to supporting the communities where we live and work, and we will continue to strive to serve and uplift the people who make up those communities, in D.C. and across the country.
We also support our member companies who have taken a stand against racism and social injustice through their aid to organizations committed to this urgent cause.
This is our chance to act in solidarity with our friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even strangers, who rightly demand to be treated with dignity and respect.
