Boys will be boys, yes, but they don't have to smell like them. When Stephanie Capuano was packing up her 14 year-old son and shipping him off to boarding school a few years ago, the pitfalls of puberty were apparent. Acne reared its ugly blackheads and the kid didn't exactly smell like roses.
To remedy the problem, Capuano made a beeline to the drugstore, but didn't like what she found—aerosol deodorants that were bad for the planet and skin care "with harsh" chemicals. Of course, the former pharma & biotech PR exec did what all moms do to protect their children, she created her own personal care brand.
The result, 31st State (named after California, Capuano's home state), includes overnight clearing pads, a 2-in-1 hair and body wash, deodorant and a spot-control gel. All the formulas are vegan and were developed with the help of a consultant who at one time worked for The Body Shop.
The 31st State is DTC, but is also available on Asos.com and Free People in the US, and through Liberty, Next, Ocado, Flannels and Victoria Health in the UK. All products are made in the UK, where Capuano and her family are based, and the packaging is recyclable.
