That's the lesson out of China, which recorded a jump in travel during the all-important Golden Week, which celebrates the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The holiday provided a big lift to China's travel retail business. According to estimates, nearly 640 million people traveled during the holiday week, which went a day longer than normal because Golden Week came right on the heels of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
When it is all added up, revelers spent $68.6 billion (466 billion renminbi) during the period, according to the China Tourism Research Institute. The total represents a 79% and 69.9% recovery, respectively, year-over-year on the two festivals.
