The US Presidential Election? Nah. Thanksgiving? Nope! For the world's shoppers, THE big event next month is Singles' Day, which ocurs on November 11? As the name suggests, Singles Day was started as an unofficial celebration of a person’s singledom, founded in the 1990s by Chinese university students. But Singles' Day really took off when Chinese eCommerce platform Alibaba began promoting the day as a way to profit from single consumers by providing an occasion to shop for themselves.
This year, according to Alibaba, the 11.11 Shopping Festival will have two sales windows: November 1-3 and the typical 24 hours of November 11. The pre-sale will also span across two phases: from October 21 to October 31 and from November 4 to November 10. Traditionally, 11.11 has focused on the larger, more well-known brands on Tmall. By creating a second sales window, more merchants including new brands and small businesses will have the opportunity to participate in the extended festival.

About 800 million consumers are expected to participate in this year’s 11.11. More than two million new products are expected to debut on Tmall during 11.11. According to Alibaba:
• More than 250,000 brands will participate;
• Nearly 200 luxury brands, such as Chanel, Dior and Net-A-Porter, will participate; and
• Many top luxury brands will also join in for the first time, including Prada, Cartier, Montblanc, Piaget, Balenciaga, Vacheron Constantin and Chloé.
With much of the world shopping-from-home these days, Singles' Day promises to be bigger than ever and Alibaba is trying to ensure that by offering a wider range of products and services. For example:
• More than 250,000 brands will participate;
• Nearly 200 luxury brands, such as Chanel, Dior and Net-A-Porter, will participate; and
• Many top luxury brands will also join in for the first time, including Prada, Cartier, Montblanc, Piaget, Balenciaga, Vacheron Constantin and Chloé.

Singles' Day will not be limited to physical products, according to Alibaba.
• There will be more than 400 company executives and 300 celebrities conducting livestreams this 11.11.
This year, Alibaba launched its first “Go Global Pitch Fest," which enabled small US businesses to globally expand. Nine winning brands were selected to launch on Tmall Global–Alibaba’s cross-border marketplace to sell to China – and will be highlighted during this year’s 11.11 festival.
