James Holleran, a long-time beauty industry executive, died Friday. He was 59. Holleran had been hospitalized for ulcerative colitis in recent months, according to a Facebook statement from the Madison Holleran Foundation. Holleran launched the Foundation to help prevent suicide after the 2014 death of his daughter, Madison. He had stepped back from his role as the foundation's acting executive vice president last month to focus on health issues, the foundation previously announced.
A graduate of High Point University with a degree in chemistry, Holleran spent nearly two decades in the cosmetics industry; first, as an account manager with Amerchol and Dow Chemical and later, with Jarchem Industries. Most recently, he was a tennis instructor in Waldwick, NJ.
With the Holleran family's support, the New Jersey Legislature passed the "Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act," signed in 2016 by then-Gov. Chris Christie. Under the law, all New Jersey colleges must provide access to health care professionals with mental health training 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and notify students of the availability of such counseling within 15 days of their arrival on campus.
