Hourglass will launch a sustainable cosmetics line in June. According to the company, the yet-to-be-named line will feature refillable packaging that will be customizable, too. Part of Hourglass’ upcoming fall 2021 launches, produced using tin, aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastic, it's just the latest sustainable initiative from the Unilever-owned brand.
Last month, Hourglass introduced the ingredient “Red 0,” its vegan alternative to carmine, a coloring produced by crushing female cochineal insects. Company Founder and CEO Carisa Janes noted that one pound of carmine requires 70,000 insects—or about 1,000 beetles per lipstick.
Red 0 is formulated in a limited-edition $40 red lipstick. A creamy, richly pigmented and buildable red with a satin finish, its packaging is slim and embellished with a beetle. The formula is part of Hourglass' Confession line, a collection of vegan, refillable lipsticks available in 32 shades.
