P&G's Tide is kicking off a new educational campaign for Earth Month focused on getting consumers to switch off the default mode of warm or hot when it comes to their laundry, and wash on cold. Tide is calling for everyone to join their #TurnToCold movement and make cold water washing the standard for all Americans.
Why? For the good of your clothes, your wallet, and the planet. Firstly, consumers save both money and energy – using up to 90% less energy and saving up to $150 a year on their energy bills by washing on cold instead of hot.
Also, over 2/3 of Tide’s climate footprint comes from the consumer use phase, which includes the energy needed to heat the water for laundry. The single biggest impact we can have in the laundry room and when it comes to protecting our planet is by turning the wash temperature to cold.
Additionally, washing on cold with Tide preserves the vibrancy of colors, extends the life of clothes and protects them from shrinking. Tide’s newest detergent, Tide Hygienic Clean 10x Heavy Duty, is formulated with 50% more cleaning power and was specifically formulated to perform better in cold than bargain brands in hot.
With over 25 billion loads of laundry being done every year in the US and Canada, Tide’s mission within the next decade is to ensure that three out of four loads of laundry are washed on cold by 2030. The shift has the power to reduce 4.25 million metric tons (MT) of greenhouse gas emissions every year which would be like removing about a million cars from the road for a year.
