Walmart recalled Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones after the spray killed two due to the presence of Burkholderia pseudomallei. The bacterium kills 90,000 people a year, primarily in southeast Asia, according to experts. The product had been manufactured in India and sold at Walmart. The recall involves about 3,900 units. The product was sold in about 55 Walmart stores and online at walmart.com from February to October, 2021.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a heath alert last June, when the three cases in Kansas, Minnesota and Texas were linked. By the time they found the source this month, it had made four people sick and killed two of them.
The CDC hasn't identified the source of the Burkholderia pseudomallei, but experts said it may be tied to the gemstones, since they are mined in rocks and soil.
