Moda Operandi, an eCommerce platform for designer fashion, is entering the beauty business. To get there, the company hired Jessica Matlin as director of beauty. Most recently, Matlin was beauty director at Harper's Bazaar. She is also the cofounder and host of Fat Mascara podcast. Moda Operandi will initially offer makeup, skincare and fragrance.
Moda Operandi is just the latest retailer to enter the beauty space. Last month, Farfetch introduced 100 prestige brands to its site. That move came after Farfetch acquired specialty retailer Violet Grey in January. Last month, Moda took a minority stake in Neiman Marcus Group. Critical mass is, well, critical. Other online fashion companies, as others like Net-a-porter and Ssense, enter beauty, too.
Moda has more than 1,000 brands and designers across fashion, fine jewelry and home on the website. It ships to more than 125 countries.
“I am excited to be leading this category launch, embracing a unique lens on luxury beauty with a thoughtful mix of content and commerce centered around exclusive access, elevated editorial and brand discovery,” Matlin said in a statement.
Matlin has developed a keen eye for the beauty business. Since its debut in 2016, Fat Mascara has interviewed leading executives, including Aerin Lauder, Bobbi Brown and Emily Weiss.
