Washington State’s Department of Ecology has proposed seven new “Priority Chemicals and Chemical Classes” used in a wide variety of consumer products, including household cleaners, pigments and personal care. The announcement launches “Cycle 2” of regulations as part of Safer Products for Washington, which is the nation’s strongest law regulating select chemicals in products. The news comes one week after the state department finalized its Cycle 1 regulations that bans select chemicals in plastic casings, vinyl flooring and beverage liners.
The seven chemical classes proposed in this latest announcement include: 6PPD; benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene and xylene substances (BTEX); brominated and/or chlorinated substances; cadmium and cadmium compounds; cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes; formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers; and lead and lead compounds.
The draft proposal will be available for public comment through July 14, 2023. Interested parties can submit comments using the state’s online comment form. The state will also host a webinar June 21, 9am PDT, on the topic.
