Philip Pelusi, hair care expert and founder of Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi P2 by Philip Pelusi and Performance X208.08.16
Summer is the time of year when we seem to feel more carefree and hairstyles more relaxed and easygoing. But when it comes to the hair and scalp, the actual effects of summer weather can be anything but that. The Ultra Violet Rays from the sun, copper deposits from chlorine, drying effects of salt water, as well as sebum and frizz-producing higher humidity, all create at minimum, annoying effects to sometimes even greater harmful effects to the hair and scalp. So how do we experience a carefree summer and keep our hair and scalp healthy in the meantime? Put the right safeguards in place via the latest beach-friendly haircare ingredient technology along with this season’s sizzling hair trends and you’ll have the summer, and hair, of your dreams.
Apply Some Shade
One of the most critical safeguards to put in place immediately is an application of sun protection. We seem to have gotten the hang of routinely applying sunscreen to our face and bodies, some even going as far as applying a sunscreen to their face and neck every morning as part of their anti-aging skin care regimen. But for the most part, hair has been completely off the sun protection radar. Hair can get a “sunburn” in much of the same way as the skin. And although the skin can lose collagen and elastin, the hair’s cuticle and cortex can also degrade under the influence of UV light, resulting in potholes of missing keratin on the hair. These potholes mean loss of tensile strength therefore eventually breakage, and they are also a place where color molecules as well as essential moisture can escape. All of this results in poor performing and unattractive looking hair. Therefore, light should be filtered on the hair in a similar same way the skin is protected.
This is why I was so passionate about creating our new Tela Beauty Organics Guardian Angel Solar Hair Serum. Its unique UVA/UVB sunlight filters including Sunflower Seed Extract and Chlorophyllin help protect hair from getting a sunburn providing maximum protection of hair fiber from color fadage and tensile strength degradation due to UV exposure. As with other products I’ve created, this seemed to be something that was missing from the marketplace that could be a real help to our customers. So clients of any hair texture or density can apply Tela Guardian Angel to their hair repeatedly while in the sun and every morning before applying any other styling products; just like they would in a skin care regimen before applying cosmetics.
Other unique organic hydrating oils such as USDA Certified Organic Sachi Inchi Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oiland Quinoa Seed Oil at minimum help de-frizz and detangle hair making this one of the hottest hair helping products for after post pool or ocean haircare. But their real benefits lie in what they do to the hair and scalp upon absorption. All three of these substantive oils deeply penetrate the hair and scalp providing moisture and strength with antioxidants Vitamins A and E, Omega Fatty Acids 3, 6 and 9, high protein contents with Quinoa Seed Oil containing all 8 essential amino acids. The result is moisturized hair and scalp, increased strength, brilliant shine, less frizz and heat protection for during styling. Everything any head of hair needs all year round especially in the summer.
Modern Summertime Shag
One of the most popular haircut trends for Summer 2016 is the Modern Shag. Once a huge trend in the late 1960’s and early 70’s, this look has been made new again by style stars such as singer Taylor Swift and model Alexa Chung. Today’s modern shag is layered with soft waves and loose curls; no Mrs. Brady flipped up ends here! Color-wise this season’s shag is mostly solid colored with varying tones but no specific highlights. Hair also needs to be in tip top shape because today’s modern shag looks lush with body and shine.
To get the look, first get a fabulous haircut. We of course recommend going to a skill certified Philip Pelusi Volumetric® trained stylist. Our exclusive organic cutting system takes into account each person’s unique hair texture, growth patterns and facial shape to create a custom hair design specific to you.
Next get the right system of products to create the look. The hair should have light fluffy body because this season’s Modern Shag is a fuller look worn with a natural wave or waves created by a big barrel curling iron; nothing straight or slicked close to the head. Summer heat and humidity don’t help in this effort in that they produce excess scalp sebum that can actually weigh down the entire look. Create a clean palette with a deep cleansing and oil-controlling shampoo treatment either applied every day or several times a week to keep hair and scalp free from debris and build up. We recommend one of our latest shampoo creations, our P2 by Philip Pelusi DeTox Shampoo Treatment. It gently cleanses the scalp with our proprietary Sugar Cane Cleanse Blend of Sugar Cane, Sugar Maple, Bilberry and Apple alpha hydroxy acids to loosen and help exfoliate dead skin cells. But it also helps control oil secretions with a PH balancing micro-emulsion of Rocket Leaf, Ivy, Watercress and Whortleberry. These natural ingredients help keep the scalp cleaner longer making this a life-changing product for individuals with natural oily scalps and a summer hair saver to help ward off the effects of excess heat and humidity.
For styling this season’s Modern Shag consider the hair texture. If the hair is on the finer side, apply a few mists of a non-crispy texture building spray to damp hair first. We recommend our Tela Beauty Organics Boost Sensational Volume Booster. It contains organic plant derived proteins that help build volume and texture yet leaves the hair feeling soft and natural. It also contains a myriad of organic antioxidants such as Organic Reishi Mushroom and Fo Ti to help protect hair color and create shine.
Next, apply a wave enhancer that helps eliminate frizz and creates lustrous shine. Our Tela Beauty Organics Curls of My Dreams Organic Curl Boost Anti Frizz Serum contains a specialized organic plant derived micro-emulsion that helps to boost wave on naturally wavy heads and also helps hold curling iron waves when applied to smoother textures which are to be curled later after drying. Allow hair to dry naturally or diffuse dry with a light scrunching motion and touch up with a curling iron if needed after hair is completely dry.
If more waves are needed to create this look, use fingertips amounts of a weightless heat protectant if using a curling iron. Use a wide barrel iron so the curls look more like big modern waves and not tiny curls. For protection, try Tela Encore Organic Dri Styling Crème and Split End Repair. Apply a small fingertip swipe of this highly concentrated product to the mid-shaft down to the tips of the hair then wind the iron around for a minute and let cool.
Finally, tousle waves and create modern movement with a pliable, non-drying, hair texture-creating groom. Our Tela Beauty Organics Beach Hair was formulated to get that just from the beach look but without the damage; perfect for this season’s Modern Shag. Organic Sugar Cane granules embedded in a moisturizing creamy mixture help to finish the style. Use fingertip amounts to piece and separate. Hair will feel soft and look modern while staying under control. Very concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
Bust Summer Frizz
Unfortunately combatting frizz also seems to be a summer pastime for clients along with swimming and sipping lemonade! Summer styles such as the Modern Shag devolve when the hair takes on the moisture from summer’s humid air and frizz starts to form. So I wanted to create an instant frizz remedy that works on any texture, especially wavy and curly textures, and can be used throughout the day. This exciting new product is our Tela Beauty OrganicsFrizz Buster Anti-Frizz Dry Texture Spray. Emollient rich with Organic Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Organic Quinoa Oil, this multi-task wonder eliminates frizz on any texture and density of dry hair as well as on fine to medium textures for wet to dry hair styling. This dry spray does not “wet” hair so it can be used repeatedly throughout the day to de-frizz, add shine and for touch up styling without disturbing the style. It also makes a great heat protectant for flat and curling iron styling.
Swim with a Life Preserver!
Other damaging effects of the summer season are the impact of swimming pool chlorine and saltwater from the ocean. Both act as corrosive agents on the hair; eroding the cuticle and cortex, weakening and drying out the hair and fading color. Copper combines with chlorine in treated water, not only in swimming pools but in our drinking water, and can deposit a greenish hue to lighter hair colors and make brunettes look brassy. And because we are in the business of creating and maintaining healthy hair and hair color, it was essential for me to create a chlorine and mineral removing shampoo that not only extracts these elements from the hair fiber but also doesn’t fade color. Also critical, was that this type of shampoo had to leave the hair feeling healthy, silky and full of body. This was the thought process behind my P2 by Philip Pelusi Clarify Treatment Shampoo. In fact, part of our test group while creating the product were several light blonde swim team members. They were in a pool approximately 4 hours a day so they were the prefect test group.
It has been one of our most popular products over the years especially once summer rolls around. Chlorine neutralizing ingredients combat chlorine and stop oxidation on contact. Other high tech ingredients sequester minerals such as copper and iron. This shampoo treatment can be used before swimming to ward off these aggressors from so easily clinging to the hair and of course to remove them during rinse-out. We also recommend it is used both on the hair and on bathing suits to help preserve both all summer long.
Lighten and Brighten
We truly aren’t ready for the summer season without a lighter and brighter new hair color look. And for this season, icy cool brilliant blonde hair color is one the hottest hair trends. Stars Taylor Swift, Michelle Williams and Scarlet Johansson are just some of the trend setters. The more traditional golden blonde warm weather highlights will probably always be a summer mainstay, but this season’s blondes are anything but warm in tone. Cool toned blondes are so cool they are even verging on and into blueish, grey and even violet hues. The look is more of a solid overall color application as opposed to highlighting. Color can be done from root to tip but also dark roots are absolutely allowed too.
Due to this trend’s unique icy cool tone, we always recommend getting professional guidance and a custom color formulation to make sure it perfectly accents the clients skin tone and eye color. Also with the bright summer sunlight as a harmful factor plus the natural inclination of this high-lift hair color process to be a bit more damaging, it is critical to protect the hair helping keep color intact. We recommend our Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Color Lock for this very purpose. This powerful additive should be mixed right into their color formula before application. It is uniquely formulated to minimize damage during professional chemical color services. We believe that professional colorists can now provide a more exclusive, premiere color service by infusing Tela Color Lock into their client’s customized color formula. This anti-color fade serum contains 75% USDA Organics Ingredients, creating vibrancy and shine. Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Color Lock helps prevent color-fadage up to an amazing 80% between touch ups and keeps color vibrant and shiny for up to 20+ shampoos! Also available is a take-home version to maintain fresh color results.
Next, moisture replenishment is key to this color trend. Highly lightened hair is more delicate. So to keep luster and manageability we recommend a dose of humectants one to two times a week via a deep conditioning treatment with substantive ingredients that penetrate the hair and scalp therefore providing long range moisture. We recommend our P2 HaiRx Deep Hair and Scalp Treatment. One of its key ingredients is the high end skin care humectant Hyaluronic Acid. This treatment has the ability to hold Hyaluronic Acid on the hair strand and scalp, delivering much needed moisture for several days to a week depending on the porosity of the hair. A once-per-week regimen is recommended for finer hair while medium to coarser textures can apply this biweekly. Leave it on for 10 minute or more followed by a thorough rinse. And P2 Deep can be applied to hair while sun bathing or working around the yard in the summer and rinsed out later. It’s a real summer season multitasker!
And for an additional measure of color protection to this brilliant blonde trend, we recommend a once or twice a week application of a color enhancing conditioner in a violet toned shade. I wanted to create a deposit-only product therefore steering clear of creating a color shampoo. I found it’s much more difficult and actually counterproductive to get any type of safe and lasting deposit while trying to simultaneously cleanse the hair.
We recommend clients include our P2 Color Boost Conditioner in Violet Orchid to their deep conditioning regime once or twice a week to boost the cool tones of this trend and minimize warmth. We also offer in-salon P2 Color Boost Treatments in all of our 8 shades; even custom blending them to perfectly support the customers unique shade or tone.
