Philip Pelusi, hair care expert and founder of Tela Beauty Organics 06.19.17
Hair trends are a bit upside down for the season.  But in a good way.  Normally we are talking about going light and bright with color while now, colors go warm and rich with fiery, feisty redheads.  Also gone are the days where smooth, straight hair is coveted.  The bigger, wilder and more natural the texture the better and the more on-trend.  And last ponytails take a turn and instead of a laidback look, they go dressed-up, braided and bedazzled.  And to help create these groundbreaking looks, innovative pioneering organic ingredients help enhance texture, improve condition, help color last longer and flat out make hair look fabulous.

    Perfectly Natural
Texture is now taking a walk on the wild side.  Not that relaxers and straightening services won’t have their place.  Not that there will not be clients that want their weekly salon blow-out or products to smooth and silken their hair.  But the tide has turned for texture.  Several years ago, along with the consumer desire for organic and green products, clients starting pushing away from chemical services.  Consumers are more aware than ever about what goes onto and into their bodies.  Also as fashion constantly evolves, hairstyles do as well with a resurgence of big, wavy or curly hair.  And the 2017 perfectly natural texture trend is evidence of this.

Almost every store ad, clothing line, jewelry and cosmetic company have someone representing them with some type of natural texture.  Fashion runways are now ruled by models Imaan Hamman, Lineisy Montero and Luisiana Gonzalez; all wearing their perfectly natural hair texture.  This trend is on in a big way.  But natural texture does need a little taming from time to time.  Not thru chemicals or straighteners but instead thru natural in-salon treatments and innovative texture-taming styling grooms.

I took an organic approach to this by creating our revolutionary Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Dream Hair Collection.  Three in-salon treatment service products and 3 parallel-ingredient take home serums enhance the clients’ texture and support the treatment they receive from their stylist.  All gently help manage the hair texture in a way never created before without harsh chemicals or chemical reduction or alteration.

These high-tech yet easy to use, formaldehyde-free conditioning products give both the stylist and the client a brand-new approach to managing their texture never available to them before.  The cutting-edge technology and innovative ingredients of our Tela Dream Hair Collection work with the keratin in the hair without raising the cuticle.  Instead, organic and natural ingredients activated by the steam and heat from a flat or curling iron help compress the keratin in the hair into a semi-permanent improved texture state and leaves it in even better condition than it was before.

We have three choices available.  First, for helping control bulky, unruly, too-big hair, we have our Tela Phyto Keratin Treatment Blow Out.  Its proprietary Tela Phyto-Keratin Micro-emulsion reinforces keratin bonds pulled into a more-smooth configuration without rearranging the hair’s stronger disulfide bonds.  Its take home companion product Tela Smooth Operator Blow Out Serum helps reinforce the service’s effects.  And although this helps clients that blow-dry and flat iron their hair straight and smooth, it also works perfectly for those who want to wear their natural curly or wavy texture but want more control, less frizz and a “less-big” hair feel.  These products are also a huge help to those who are transitioning their texture; growing out their chemical relaxer into their natural texture.  Both products help renew the condition of the previously relaxed portion of the hair while also helping manage the new growth.

As another option, if natural curl needs a boost and more definition, opt for our Tela Girls Who Love Curls Anti-Frizz Treatment.  Its exclusive Organic Quinoa is a complete protein that helps to strengthen and add spring to curls along with the help of the heat and active steam of a curling iron to infuse the ingredients into the hair’s cuticle and cortex.  It’s at home support product the Tela Curls of My Dreams Anti-Frizz Serum continues to deposit parallel ingredients each time the hair is styled.

And last if added texture and volume is needed for any hair type especially fine limp hair, select the newly updated Tela Make It Bigger! Treatment.  Previously known as Tela Dream Big!, this totally unique treatment and serum duo contains Organic Baobab Protein helping those texture-challenged individuals get their finer more-sparse hair closer to the now popular big hair trend giving the feel and look of thicker, more volumous hair.  It’s take home partner Tela Make It Bigger! Serum adds a dose of Organic Baobab Protein, Ceramides and moisturizing Fruit Acids continue to achieve extra volume every day.  All Tela take-home serums help the treatments last longer and hair style better.

Other advanced ingredients that are threaded throughout these products are our Patent Pending Hydro-Charged Pelusi Ceramide Complex that helps to reinforce the outer cuticle layer of the hair helping to create shine and prevent color fadage.  Containing more than 85% Organic ingredients including Organic Baobab Seed Oil, Organic Lavender and Organic Aloe for weightless moisture and shine.  Additionally, this trio contains our proprietary Sugar Cane Blend comprises of Sugar Cane, Sugar Maple and Bilberry that help strengthen the hair and scalp making them more resilient.

The Tela Dream Hair Collection Treatments last in the hair about 4 – 6 weeks upon the initial application with cumulative effects making treatments eventually last up to 10 weeks depending on how frequently the hair is shampooed, how fast the hair grows and what maintenance products are used such as shampoo, condition and styling products.  To get the most predictable results we recommend using products either from our Tela Beauty Organics line or from our P2 by Philip Pelusi line since all ingredients are compatible.

And last, textured hair usually needs some finishing after it dries and perhaps touched-up during the day depending on what elements to which the hair is exposed.  We recommend Tela Frizz Buster Anti-Frizz Dry Texture Spray.  This incredible spray eliminates frizz on contact on any texture.  It should be lightly misted onto the hair and then finger-styled to perfect the look.  It contains one of the most cutting edge organic ingredients; USDA Certified Organic Jamaican Black Castor Oil.  Such an interesting ingredient, the castor plant is organically grown in Jamaica then its seeds are roasted and take on a dark color and give off a black ash.  The seeds are then cold-pressed to retain its nutrients of Vitamin E and Omega 9 Fatty Acids.

We also added the unique ingredients USDA Certified Organic Quinoa Oil and Organic Baobab Seed Oil.  Instantly absorbed, these oils are cold-pressed in the same manner as the Organic Black Castor Oil and also impart 8 essential amino acids and Vitamin E and Vitamin D3 and 5 Fatty Acids respectively.  Hair looks glossy yet feels light and airy with a bit of control.

    Feisty Red Hair Color
Full of spark and fire, this Spring, hair colors outside the lines.  Instead of the traditional light and bright looks of blonde and caramel highlights, this season hair color goes wild and red.  Both tones are present; deep rich cranberry or warm coppery cinnamon ranging from light to dark.  This has been a signature look for actress Julianne Moore, but recent on-the-scene faces such as models Varya Shutova and Katherine Moore are known for this russet locks.  And actress Ali Larter recently turned her locks from blonde to crimson red.

To get this look, first we always recommend going to a professional colorist.  As we know, hair color is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.  Especially when transitioning someone from blonde to red.  And after getting the color just right, keeping hair color molecules locked tightly in the cortex is the biggest challenge for most; very important for keeping the color looking great and to keep the client happy building client loyalty.  But we’ve got some solutions for this.

First, we recommend starting in the color mixing bowl.  We add our exciting, newTela Beauty Organics Color Lock Treatment.  We add few drops of Tela Color Lock into the client’s actual color formula thereby depositing its’ color preserving ingredients into the hair shaft along with the color molecules while the cuticle is open.  Tela Color Lock deposits luxurious conditioning ingredients that buffer residual alkalinity, helping further protect the hair by neutralizing the residual “ammonia footprint” left behind by the color formula.  Specifically, it’s revolutionary Coconut Protein Micro-emulsion helps to buffer the damaging effects of the color formula itself to the cuticle and the cortex.  Tela Color Lock helps greatly improve the overall condition of hair.  A specialized Canola Seed Oil produces an average 70% improvement in overall conditioning and a 10% increase in shine while helping improve the color deposit.

Tela Color Lock also deposits hair-protective UVA and UVB absorbers to help protect the hair fiber from damaging UV rays.  A patented Board Spectrum UVA/UVB Absorber provides long lasting substantive protection resulting in 58% - 320% greater effectiveness than its competition.  It helps protect hair color and preserves hair’s integrity from fading due to sun exposure that causes a loss in strength, while helping retard the decomposition of Tryptophan, a key amino acid, when exposed to UV radiation, which would lead to disulfide bond breakage resulting in color loss and damage.  Since this new products’ release, we have received wonderfully positive feedback from stylists and clients alike on how beautiful the hair looks and feels and how much more additional shine they have since adding this to the color application.

A two-ounce take-home version can be purchased and added into the clients existing conditioning routine to continually feed the hair its’ color preserving ingredients.  And although Tela Color Lock does produce amazing color preserving results, this is also predicated on the color client cleansing with the recommended shampoo followed by a color protecting conditioner and styling products as well.  We, of course, educate all of our customers on a full system of products not only to retain their color investment but also to help them be able to recreated their style at home.

Next, we recommend a combination hair strengthen and color sealer.  Our P2 by Philip Pelusi Rx RepairHair Treatment is a heat activated, advanced technology formula that’s comes as close to a permanent mend to a damaged hair site that is scientifically possible.  At the top of it’s very long list of hair repair ingredients stands a big-science Wheat Protein and Cysteine Protein Complex.  In addition, three Gluten-free proteins, Wheat, Corn and Soy, are also in the formula to help provide various size molecules helping rebuild the hair from the inside out.  They effectively accomplish this but with the now-important Gluten-free benefit so important to meet today’s consumer concerns.

P2 RepairHair can be applied to damp hair prior to blow-dry styling or to dry hair prior to flat or curling iron work.  In either case, these hair-healing ingredients flood the cuticle and the cortex reaching even the deepest damaged hair sites with the help of the heat of the styling tool.  It can also be applied to damp hair and used as a traditional deep conditioning treatment and then rinsed from the hair.  The weightless humectant derived from Cassia Angustifolia Seed also provides heat protection and shine but without adding any weight.

An additional help to feisty redhead hair color would be to also use a color enhancing conditioner.  I opted to create a color conditioner as opposed to a color shampoo.  Naturally, one would get the best staining deposit via a conditioner formula as opposed to a shampoo which simultaneously cleanses the hair.  Our P2 by Philip Pelusi Color Boost Color Enhancing Conditioner does exactly that and is super easy to use therefore increasing the usage of the product at home by clients while it can also be applied to the hair as part of an in-salon deep conditioning treatment by adding it to any conditioner.

Although this line comes in 8 different shades from blonde to brunette, for this Spring’s feisty redhead trend try our P2 Color Boost in Mandarin Citrus for warm reds or Cherrymint Bark for cool.  Also, these can be mixed together to reach a custom hue depending on how much warm or cool tones you and the client want to see.  No softening agents, these products can be used on any texture therefore the moisture and softness level the stylist wants to achieve depends on whatever instant or deep conditioner they choose to pair with the P2 Color Boost.  Very versatile and easy to use.

Natural dehydrated flower pigments, imported from the Louis Pasteur Clinic in France, plus human hair melanin for the darker shades, are what help P2 Color Boost do its magic.  Not only do these products serve as an additional insurance policy for the customer to protect their hair color investment, but they also give the stylist another tool to differentiate themselves in the marketplace and helps makes their color service even that more special with a custom blended P2 Color Boost for the guest to take home with them.

    Dressed Up Ponies
Normally as we move from the holidays into the season, hairstyles become more casual and relaxed.  Ponytails usually do too but not for this Spring season.  They’ve gotten all dressed up.  Braided, twisted or adorned with jewels, pins and metallic bands.  There is no specific way to wear the braid either; meaning hair can be worn half-up and half-down, worn with a high or low ponytail, tight or loosely braided.  The sky’s the limit on creativity.

But the right styling tools make all the difference in creating these ponytail looks.  First get the right amount of texture on the hair.  Prepare late in the day or second day hair with a powder-free dry shampoo.  When creating our Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Dri Shampoo, I opted for a spray-on version with ingredients that add shine while eliminating surface debris and freshening hair’s scent.

It’s Organic Lavender Oil freshens hair’s scent and creates shine.  But color protection is also a benefit with this product, with powerful anti-oxidants Organic Reishi Mushroom, Oolong Tea, Chinese Foxglove and White Tea helping to prevent hair color oxidation.  Mist on and brush through the hair till the proper level of texture is achieved.

No matter what type of dressed-up ponytail you want to create, products that mold and groom the hair while remaining soft and pliable are absolutely necessary.  If setting the hair first, use Tela Dri Shampoo for a very light hold or switch into a still flexible spray that has a little more hold.  We recommend our P2 by Philip Pelusi Fluid Spray.  Great for any type of setting; curling iron, hot rollers or Velcro.  Mist the product on the section first then wrap the hair around, let set a second or two with a curling iron and a couple of minutes for rollers.  Unwrap, let cool and get body with flexible hold.  Organic Baobab Oil helps keep the product soft and moveable while adding shine.

Then for sculpting your dressed-up ponytail, choose a hair molding groom depending on the finish you want to create on the hair.  We recommend our P2 by Philip Pelusi Forming Wax with hydrating Shea Butter and Meadowfoam Seed for a high gloss sheen and lots of control.  For a demi-gloss finish with flexible hold, try our P2 Honey with actual honey humectants that moisturize while giving a soft, pliable hold.  Once you finish creating your look, add a dash of P2 Fluid Spray to lightly hold the whole look in place.  Last, adorn your dressed-up ponytail with jeweled clips or pins or add a flashy hairband to tie off the look perfect for right now.
