Hair moods swing from one extreme to the other this Fall and Winter Season, with looks ranging from fiery copper hues, to warm romantic waves, to dark glossy slicked back hair. So, we need to be primed with on-point trends, techniques and technology-driven ingredients to meet our guests needs, create the styles, while simultaneously protecting color investments and dramatically improving the condition of hair.
Copper Hair Color
Deep ginger, warm cinnamon and crimson chestnut define this season’s most popular color trend, Copper Hair Color. And although it is quite common for guests to convert to a deeper and warmer hair color in the fall and winter, this season warm hues take on a bolder and brighter look. The Copper Hair Color look is more of an all over, solid looking hue but with dimension. No large striped highlights here, but instead subtle application techniques with vibrant red hues best describe this season’s copper hair trend. Like a brand-new copper penny, the tone is intense and warm, no cool cranberry tones, nothing muted, just tons of shine and luster.
As we know, keeping a guest’s hair color investment lasting longer can be a bigger challenge when coloring over top of summer sun-worn hair. Hair is more damaged and porous and therefore does not hold onto color molecules, especially warmer red pigments, as well as on a healthier head of hair. The summer sun, and chlorine exposure as well, degrades the proteins in the hair, slowly wearing away the outer cuticle layer and eventually the inner cortex layer of the hair. Hair becomes porous, or as we educate our guests, filled with potholes from which the color molecules can easily escape.
To help prevent this, we educate our guests to “repave the road of their hair” by filling up those potholes with hair color holding proteins. First with an in-shower product application and next with a pre-styling strengthening buffer. In-shower, we recommend guest’s mist on a daily application of our P2 by Philip Pelusi Xtreme Daily Treatment after every shampoo. When hair is wet it is in its most receptive state, so this is perfect time to add strength to the hair. P2 Xtreme contains 3 different Gluten Free protein molecules that provide balanced conditioning, Wheat, Corn and Soy, that fill in the damaged keratin sites from deep inside the cortex all the way out to the outer cuticle layer. These proteins produce incredible conditioning results and the Gluten Free aspect makes them incredibly appealing in today’s ingredient-sensitive marketplace.
By filling in these missing potholes of protein, hair is resurfaced, helping it to hold the color molecules in below the surface. Hair is smoother and therefore reflects light similar to healthy hair, so it sparkles with lustrous shine. Hair is also stronger therefore more resistant to heat and any future chemical or color service damage. Hair is also less porous, so future hair color services take better and last longer. And P2 Xtreme penetrates easily in 3 minutes so its fast and easy for any busy guest, or stylist, to use at home or in the salon as part of a treatment.
For guests that are very short on time or for an extra layer of protection, we recommend our guest’s use our P2 by Philip Pelusi RepairHair Smart Styling Treatment. This product is normally applied to damp hair prior to any other styling product but can also be applied to dry hair prior to flat or curling iron work. It instantly turns your blow-dryer, flat or curling iron into a deep conditioning tool. Thanks to our Micro-emulsion Technology, P2 RepairHair’s proprietary, high specialized Wheat and Cysteine Protein Micro-emulsions are the right molecular size and easily penetrate in to damaged keratin sites. But with the heat from styling tools, this penetration is much deeper and happens more rapidly. Depending on the level of damage, most heads of hair turn from rough to smooth in an instant and P2 RepairHair improves the condition and resilience of any hair fabric instantly. And by filling in these porous openings in the hair strand, color molecules are more secure in the cortex producing less possibilities of color fadage.
And to help further keep those vibrant coppery red hues, we also recommend a dose of our P2 by Philip Pelusi Color Boost Color Enhancing Conditioners. Color guests can have a custom P2 Color Boost blended for them by one of our Skill-Certified Philip Pelusi Stylists to take home to help maintain their color. The product is so easy to use, right along with their regular conditioning routine. As we established, summer-worn hair is more porous and some color fadage may take place especially during water exposure and heat styling. So, to add some spark to those copper tones, try a blend of our P2 Color Boost in Gold Magnolia, Ginger Root and Mandarin Citrus. Depending on the desired depth of copper, these 3 colors can be blended in varying amounts to hit just the right hue.
Super Sleek Slicked Back Hair
Texture takes 2 paths this season; one soft and romantic and other slick and sleek. Super Sleek Slicked Back Hair brings some drama to the season. Center or side parted, combed straight back or smoothed into sweeping finger waves, this look can reflect any mood. If hair is short and cropped, then the entire head should be worn slicked back and shiny. But if hair is mid-length to longer, then the hair should be worn with a dual texture with the front of the hair sleek, crisp and glossy and the back length of the hair with a dry finish and a slightly roughed texture. Also, this look works best on mostly or completely solid hair colors. It works exceptionally well with this season’s rich copper hair color trend as well as with solid double processed platinum blondes or jet black or deep chocolate brunettes. It is not meant to be worn on Ombre’ or highlighted hair.
To get the look, start with blown dry or only slightly damp hair. Decide the type of slicked back hair sculpture you want to create and then start applying a super crisp, firm holding styling gel. We recommend our P2 by Philip Pelusi Hard Stuff Crystal Gloss and Groom. It smells incredible with its fresh Lemongrass scent, but the wow factor of this gel is its holding power, holding 7 times firmer than any other gel on the marketplace. And its completely water and shampoo soluble so it rinses clean away with zero build-up.
Quickly work the hair into place with a comb and fingertips. Get the hair in place and it will dry quickly for a long lasting, never moving hold. If creating finger waves requiring a little more play time or pliability to the product, simply add a few drops of our P2 by Philip Pelusi Polish into the palm of your hands along with a dollop of the P2 Hard Stuff. P2 Polish contains USDA Certified Organic Baobab Seed Oil that will help keep the P2 Hard Stuff a bit more flexible but still allows it to dry firm and crisp. The rest of the hair should be allowed to air dry or diffuse dry the length while slightly scrunching to rough up the texture.
And even though both products are shampoo soluble, if hair feels heavy with product, start with a fresh palette with our P2 by Philip Pelusi Clarify Shampoo Treatment. This shampoo is something we always recommend in the summertime due to its chlorine removing ingredients, but its perfect anytime of the year to remove dirt, oil and product buildup from the hair and scalp. That’s also why it’s the perfect shampoo to use before a perm service in the salon.
Romantic Waves
Hair changes moods quickly this season with Romantic Waves also ruling the runways. This depicts an overall feeling for hair, meaning soft and romantic. Hair can be worn in a soft natural curl pattern or set into luxe cascading curls. Also, the aforementioned finger waves also cross over into this trend, with the front of the hair worn in firmer, glossy looking finger waves and the back of the hair worn in a flurry of soft natural looking waves.
No matter which Romantic Wave look you choose, the best foundation in creating the style we believe is our P2 by Philip Pelusi ReCurl Smart Styling Treatment. It contains a high-tech micro-emulsion of plant derived proteins that embed themselves into the hair fiber to add spring to any natural curl or wave plus adds soft texture and structure to any head of hair that will be dry-set later with hot or Velcro rollers. Apply to clean, damp hair and then either air, diffuse or blow dry.
If you are working with second-day or late in the day hair, you can easily create soft, natural looking waves with the right product and a few quick braids to set the hair. We recommend sectioning off dry hair into various shape and size braids. After sectioning the hair, mist each section with our P2 by Philip Pelusi RefresHair Smart Styling Treatment then braid that section while the spray is still damp. This hair reviving formula gives hair a soft hold while leaving it smelling like fresh White Tea and Thyme. Remember this season’s Romantic Waves look works best when waves are not uniform. So, go off-road by creating some smaller, tighter braids and some larger looser braids all on the same head. Let the braids dry a few minutes then release them into long loose natural looking waves.
