     “Come as you are” is no longer just a fun expression for a laid-back party.  It epitomizes the heart of the most popular hairstyles for the season.  Toss your comb, brush and hairspray; the look is natural texture all the way.  Whether hair is cropped into short curls, worn in cotton candy-esque fuzzy spirals, or long corkscrew curls or waves, the less fussed-with hair appears this season the better it looks.  Nice too, since this pairs well with this season’s 80’s retro clothing styles; like shoulder pads, with hair this season, the bigger the better.
     
    Hair color for the super natural trend should be natural looking too.  If color is solid, it should be soft with subtle highlights varying in only a two-level difference from the base color.  The basic rule is the shorter or curlier the hair, the less highlighted it should look.  For longer and looser curls and waves, natural hued Balayage or Ombre techniques can play a role to add dimension and depth. 
     
    Natural texture with a super natural feel.  But how to achieve this can often be a conundrum without making hair looked over-styled.  And no matter the desired end-result of size and style of curl and wave, the texture and condition issues are universal for these hair textures.  Loss of moisture, frizz, swelling in humidity, color protection, split ends and lack of shine are all common issues that need remedied. 
     
    Texture Management
    No longer are we restricted to limited options when it comes to taming natural textures.  In the past, there was a chemical approach which is becoming passé with today’s marketplace standards; customers want natural looking hair with a natural approach to maintenance and no chemical damage.  Second, we were limited to the old-school, low technology approach of taming texture from the outside of the hair strand with traditional silicones and resins that coat the hairshaft. 
     
    We are now introducing a completely new option; Philip Pelusi Texture Management.  We believe the secret to managing texture lies within the hair fiber, by depositing specific ultra-light, cutting-edge, high-technology ingredients inside the hair strand to manage the texture as if mother nature intended hair to behave that way.  And what’s so interesting is that to reach a natural looking style result, science plays a huge role.
     
    The first step in Philip Pelusi Texture Management takes place in the salon with a properly shaped haircut and a revolutionary semi-permanent hair treatment that will do a lot of the heavy style lifting; helping hair worn curly experience reduced frizz, less expansion and a smoother cuticle while giving those same heads of hair easier blowouts when worn blown out smooth.  Our P2 by Philip Pelusi Formaldehyde Free Keratin Treatment with Ceramide Complex Blow Out, is a hair smoother and rejuvenating treatment in one.  This in-salon treatment can be used on all hair types including colored treated and highlighted hair.  It helps eliminate frizz and leaves the hair smoother and shinier for approximately 4 – 6 weeks with hair reaching optimal results in 2 – 4 application times.
     
    This is a no Formaldehyde, no Aldehyde, no Formaldehyde Derivatives, no harsh chemicals, no irritating or harmful fumes or unpleasant odors, non-toxic, Sulfate free, Paraben free, Allergen Free Fragrance formula.  Unlike Brazilian treatments, perms and caustic relaxers, the P2 Formaldehyde Free Keratin Treatment with Ceramide Complex Blow Out doesn’t alter the hair’s chemistry and leaves hair stronger rather than weakening its internal structure. 
     
    With a PH of 5-6, it is gentle to the skin and safe for the stylist and clients.  It is the first smoothing treatment to use active steam generated during the flat ironing application process that allows the formula to penetrate into and through the cuticle, cementing it into a smoother state while simultaneously strengthening and moisturizing the hair fabric with special hair rejuvenating micro-emulsions.  Natural textured hair is blown out and flat ironed smooth during the application process but later can be worn either curly, wavy or blown out smooth after the service is completed and hair rests without wetting or shampooing for 8 - 24 hours.
     
    The P2 Formaldehyde Free Keratin Treatment with Ceramide Complex Blow Out, containing our totally unique P2 Ceramide/Phyto-Keratin Micro-emulsions of natural moisture-based plant derived amino acids, along with the application process, reinforces the whole keratin, not the stronger disulfide bonds, pulling and setting the keratin into a more-straight configuration.  This emulsion penetrates rapidly binding to the damage deep within the hair for long lasting strengthening and smoothing benefits with improved shine and bounce.
     
    Plus, our exclusive Patent Pending Hydro-Charged Pelusi Ceramide Complex, a potent strengthening and moisture-binding plant ceramide complex helps repair damaged sites in hair fabric with is lipid hydration system.  This helps dramatically restore hair to a healthier state, leaving hair feeling renewed, stronger, silky, shiny and lustrous.  Philip’s Ceramide Complex penetrates deeply into hair's inner structure to strengthen and reconstitute with essential moisturizing factors.  Replacing these lipids makes hair appear shiny and lowers porosity for better protection against heat and color damage. 
     
    Powerful antioxidants Green Tea, Fennel and Grape Seed and hydrating Organic Aloe help improve the condition of hair as well.
     
    Hydration Regimen
    A stylist-prescribed at-home product regimen is also critical for this low-maintenance looking but higher maintenance hair care category.  First get the right mindset when approaching caring for hair by thinking of hair like you would any other high-end fabric.  In fact, our moto is to think of hair as “the most important fabric we wear”, since we and our guests “wear our hair every day”.
     
    Moisture needs to be imparted from the beginning of the styling process; during cleansing!  Yes, cleansing is the first step in styling when it comes to natural hair textures.  We recommend our P2 by Philip Pelusi MoistureSheen Shampoo and MoistureSheen Conditioner.  Hair is drenched with the weightless humectant Cassia Angustifolia Seed.  Holding as much moisture as the powerhouse Hyaluronic Acid, Cassia Angustifolia Seed hydrates hair but with a weightless feel leaving hair fluffy and full of body which is key to achieving this look.  Our Philip Pelusi Proprietary Matrix Blend also contributes, containing Matricaria, Asafetida, Grapeseed, Blackberry, Sage and Horseradish.  They play multiple roles as antioxidants, strengtheners, weightless moisturizers and natural ultra-violet light filters.  For natural textures, this means better protection and most importantly better formed curls and waves.
     
    Even though hydration is a critical point for natural textures so is strength.  So, a once weekly strengthening and hydrating treatment is also recommended.  Any hair texture styles and performs better when it is operating at its maximum level of protein as in healthy hair, and curly hair forms and holds better formed curls too.  And although we cannot regrow a cuticle on the outside of the cortex, we can fill in damaged keratin sites with our P2 DailyHaiRx Xtreme Treatment.  Gluten Free Wheat, Corn and Soy Proteins resurface the hair filling in missing protein resulting in better defined, longer lasting curls and waves with less separation throughout the day.
     
    We couple this with a tablespoon of our P2 Deep Hydrating Hair and Scalp Conditioner.  Massaged on top of the P2 Xtreme, this creates a one-two punch of strength and moisture.  Hyaluronic Acid quenches dry scalp and hair giving it a renewed, healthier, shinier appearance with better styling performance.
     
    Upward Spiral
    Next, for styling, bring in some big science technology to control texture from the inside of the hair strand instead of coating the outside.  Our P2 Decrease Smart Styling Treatment is almost a necessity to hair worn in its natural curly or wavy texture.  It’s proprietary, high tech, Multi-fruit Microemulsion, consisting of citrus fruits Lemon and Orange plus Whortleberry, is a bulk and frizz reducing powerhouse by helping to close the cuticle and keep it closed during exposure to heat and humidity; a natural hair texture’s dream.  These plant-derived ingredients naturally help to close the cuticle of the hair helping tackle tangles and expansion and by default, create a smooth, reflective hair surface helping create shine on this normally not so shiny hair type.
     
    One of most fascinating aspects of this product is that it comes in a liquid spray form.  So, guests almost can’t believe their eyes, or for that matter their hands, when they feel their hair transform after one application of P2 Decrease.  It feels like there is nothing on the hair, which is true to a degree, in that the active ingredients are designed to be absorbed into the hair fiber changing the way hair acts from the inside.  The way they wish mother-nature had made their hair texture in the first place.  Hair is still left volumous, never flat, never sticky or greasy.  Hair feels controlled yet light as a feather.
     
    We also have support for wanna-be natural textures too.  With this trend being so popular, naturally straight hair textures want in the curl action too.  And although this next product cannot turn straight hair curly, it can help boost natural curl and wave and makes a great setting and styling tool.  We recommend our P2 ReCurl Smart Styling Treatment.  Squeeze out a dollop and smooth onto damp hair, then hand-scrunch while drying with a diffuser to help create some hand-made waves.  Also, P2 ReCurl can be used on dry or damp hair and braided into loose braids of a variety of sizes.  Once dry, remove braids for a bohemian look.
     
    The Art of The Diffuser
    One other factor in the curl equation is styling and teaching guests to style their hair.  We have found some guests need a little guidance especially when transitioning from relaxed or straightened hair into styling their own natural texture.  We give guests the following recommendations.  Properly using a cone diffuser with internal prongs allows curls to be separated and held away from the scalp, thus taking the weight off often heavy curls.  This helps hair dry more quickly with more volume and defined curls. 
     
    If hair is short, apply styling products and then finger-set curls followed by airdrying or diffuse-drying.  Medium to longer hair can be airdried but this is where a diffuser can really help dry and style the hair more quickly with better results.  For tighter curls and waves, hold the diffuser closer to the head.  For longer, looser curls and waves hold the diffuser farther away from the scalp and every few seconds lift the diffuser up towards the scalp moving in a slow yo-yo like fashion.  Most importantly if hair is naturally curly or wavy, apply styling product to almost soaking wet hair, skip all preliminary rough drying, and during styling avoid touching the hair with your hands.  This will disturb the cuticle and distort the curl pattern causing frizz.  Continue to dry hair until completely dry.
