Freshstat, a deodorizing agent and preservative manufactured by Vertellus, offers personal care and cosmetic formulators efficacy across a broad pH spectrum. In testing, Freshstat performed well across a pH range of 4 to 10. Proven effective at very low levels, Freshstat provides formulators with a cost effective preservative and deodorizing agent.
Freshstat is based on CPC (INCI: Cetylpyridinium chloride), an ingredient widely used in many oral health products. CPC has long been used to combat plaque and gingivitis in the oral cavity. CPC is recognized to be effective at concentrations of 0.05% to 0.1% against Streptococcus mutans and has recently demonstrated similar success against other varieties of Gram-positive bacteria.
Freshstat has also proven effective at inhibiting various strains of Corynebacterium, partially responsible for odor production on the skin. Corynebacterium strains were inhibited with CPC concentrations of 0.15% or less in non-ionic, anionic and cationic systems. In deodorancy testing, CPC’s performance was most notable over other antibacterials. Beyond Gram-positive bacteria, FreshStat has also demonstrated effectiveness in combatting more challenging Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Burkholderia cepacia and Enterobacter gergoviae in a variety of formulations.
According to Anahita Lion, global business manager, personal and home care at Vertellus, customers appreciate Freshstat’s flexibility to function as both a preservative and deodorizing agent.
“Personal care product manufacturers and consumers are looking for products that are safe, effective and do not persist in the environment,” Lion said. “Freshstat provides formulators with a preservative and deodorizing agent that meets all of these desires. In addition to its efficacy and safety. Freshstat’s favorable environmental footprint has been documented in several commissioned environmental studies.”
Freshstat does not contain parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing substances or triclosan.
