The ever-evolving personal care industry changes radically from one year to the next. With 2017 witnessing the rise of color cosmetics, facial masks and ramped up hair care products, what can we expect to hit the market in 2018? Fortunately for cosmetic manufacturers, in-cosmetics Global will return in April, putting the spotlight on all the latest trends.

According to Mintel, the four big trends will be: biotechnology, in response to environment stressors on skin and hair; definitions of beauty; brands with personality; and customisation driven by digital technology. R&D professionals the world over will gather at RAI Amsterdam from 17-19 April next year to benefit from in-cosmetics Global’s unmissable one-stop-shop of networking, knowledge transfer and technical tips for the next formulations. Attendance at the event will guarantee visitors are first in line to learn about innovations, upcoming trends and start-up companies.

Around 95% of exhibitors are international and will be on hand with their latest ingredients. They will be complemented by an exciting educational programme, featuring prominent speakers from across the globe and an unmatched array of interactive areas on the show floor.

For the first time, in-cosmetics will introduce a series of R&D Tours, building on the show’s focus on education and inspiration. Two topics will be covered – Biotechnology Actives and the Future in Anti-Aging – with R&D professionals invited to join an exclusive tour that will highlight the most unique, innovative ingredients on display. Also new to the 2018 show will be a Pre-Show Regulatory Conference, held in association with Conusbat, which will provide a wealth of valuable information to manufacturers.

The Formulation Lab, sponsored by Brenntag, will be one of the most popular interactive areas, where R&D professionals will learn from highly skilled experts through a series of bookable hands-on demonstrations. Providing delegates with the latest guidance on how to overcome common formulation challenges and learn the secrets to creating winning formulations, these sessions are not to be missed.

Event organizer Reed Exhibitions has announced its exciting Formulation Challenge will run at the Global event for the very first time. Sponsored by Croda on April 19, a select few leading cosmetic manufacturers will battle it out to create the most innovative and impressive formulation from a box of mystery raw materials in just 90 minutes. A panel of market specialists will judge their work and, following a nail-biting wait, the winner will be revealed, according to show organizers.

The last time In-Cosmetics took place in Amsterdam, it set attendance records and organizers expect a similar turnout due to the popularity of the city, the hundreds of exhibition stands and a stellar lineup of presentations and features that are only found at In-Cosmetics Global, the largest exhibition of its kind in the world. According to organizers, around 9,000 visitors are expected to travel to the Netherlands from more than 100 countries and GlaxoSmithKline, Beiersdorf AG, Clarins, Colgate, Procter & Gamble and L’Oréal are expected to send teams to Amsterdam. More than 700 suppliers will be present at the RAI, armed with their latest innovations and representing more than 100 countries. Brazil and South Korea will have their own pavilions. For the first time, a series of exclusive “silent” tours focusing on two highly topical subjects—Biotechnology Actives and The Future of Anti-Aging—will run throughout the show.
Sponsored by Mibelle Biochemistry and led by Rouah Al-Wakeel, a technical consultant and chemist, participants will use wireless headphones to hear info about new ingredients and technologies.

Two groups of 20, twice a day, over two days will be taken around some of the exhibition’s most popular areas including the Innovation Zone, a launchpad for more than 100 state-of-the-art ingredients, and the Sensory Bar, where participants will experience a host of new textures and sensations first hand.

“Without the knowledge and expertise of cosmetic scientists and chemists, some of the world’s most innovative products would never have made it past their initial tests,” explained Roziani Zulkifli, exhibition manager, In-Cosmetics Global. “We are excited to launch these unique R&D Tours that will help shine a spotlight on new ingredients and help inspire a new wave of products, all in a quick and convenient format.”

So, What Else Is New?

In another new initiative for 2018, In-Cosmetics Global will hold a half-day Regulatory Conference in partnership with Conusbat on April 16 at 2pm. Aimed at regulatory and compliance professionals from both ingredients suppliers and the manufacturers of finished products, the sessions will ensure attendees are informed of crucial regulations helping them create safe and effective products and enter new markets worldwide. Over the course of the afternoon, the conference will provide tailored content on cosmetics frameworks, and regulatory and testing modules in the EU, US, China and the rest of the world. Delegates are also invited to network at a drinks reception and take part in one-to-one speed meetings with the experts to discuss their regulatory challenges.

The Amsterdam show will also see cosmetics giants go head-to-head in the Formulation Challenge, which will make its In-Cosmetics Global debut. Sponsored by Croda and taking place on the final day of the event, six leading manufacturers will be tasked with creating an innovative formulation from a box of mystery raw materials in just 90 minutes. The resulting products will be judged by a panel of market specialists who will present the winning team with a trophy.

A Winning Formula

Since its launch in 2016, the In-Cosmetics Formulation Lab has become renowned around the world as a unique opportunity to learn from top suppliers about how to maximize the potential of their ingredients. Taking place in a purpose-built lab, the interactive Formulation Lab sessions bring together the industry’s most highly skilled experts to deliver a series of hands-on demonstrations.

“It was fantastic,” recalled Natalia Klenina, technologist, R&D, Splat Cosmetics. “I think it’s great that only people with laboratory experience are approved so everyone can understand and move quickly through each stage. It’s a unique opportunity to get so close to all the various ingredients and textures.”

The presentations will guide delegates through overcoming common development challenges and let them in on the secrets to creating winning formulations. The three-day program, sponsored by Brenntag, will feature practical presentations from The Institute of Personal Care Science, as well as the world’s most innovative suppliers, with 18 confirmed at press time.

The Innovation Zone will return to the 2018 event, providing a launchpad for more than 100 state-of-the-art concepts. The Zone enables time-strapped R&D scouts to find the latest ingredients all in one place, mitigating the need to scour the show floor. Mintel will also host a series of live demonstrations, presenting market-leading finished products alongside key insights into the trends that inspired them.

“I saw some really interesting technologies and some fantastic new ingredients,” said Punita Kalra, CEO Research & Innovation at Emami Ltd. “The Innovation Zone was a particular highlight, with all the wonderful products, structures and textures.”

The Make-Up Bar will demonstrate the latest innovations in pigments and technology, with visitors able to touch and experiment with the ingredients on display. Exhibitors will demonstrate their expertise and help cosmetics manufacturers identify eye, skin, nail and lip makeup formulations to deliver captivating and trend-setting color cosmetics products.

At the Sensory Bar, product developers, formulation experts and marketing professionals can experience unusual textures and sensations first-hand, including transforming and hybrid textures; heating and cooling, jellies, butters and powders in the try-out area. Textural effects remain a key focus for manufacturers and that will be reflected at the event.

The Sustainability Corner returns to In-Cosmetics Global to showcase a selection of environmental and social initiatives. The area will also highlight how the beauty industry is moving beyond compliance and paving the way toward a more sustainable business model. Experts in the field will take to the stage to deliver insightful presentations relating to this topical issue, and a dedicated area will showcase ethically-sourced ingredients and eco-friendly alternatives to harmful products such as microbeads.

“The Sustainability Corner was brilliant,” recalled Anne-Sophie Brac de la Perriere, R&D engineer, L’Oréal. “Sustainability is a key consideration for all beauty companies at the moment and proved a real highlight among my colleagues.”

Insights from Industry Leaders

Finally, the Marketing and Technical Seminars Theatres will deliver hot-off-the-press consumer trends, analysis and research data, as well as information on the latest relevant regulatory changes. Topics will be diverse but of-the-minute, with representatives from the top market analysts, including Euromonitor, PeclersParis, GlobalData and Mintel, sharing the latest data and insights into the hottest industry trends from DIY beauty to athleisure.

“The Marketing Trends program covers all the current issues that are facing the industry at the moment and it’s invaluable to hear advice from leading experts on what our next steps should be,” said Peristeri Pharmacist Eleni Alexandropoulou.

In the Technical Seminars Theatre, sponsored by Givaudan, suppliers of the world’s most technologically-advanced ingredients, including Evonik, AkzoNobel and Lipotrue, will share the science behind each innovation and how to make the most out of these concepts to create products consumers will love.

Meanwhile, the In-Cosmetics Global Workshop program will enable participants to stay ahead of industry issues. Speakers will present crucial scientific and regulatory updates such as what’s new in the field of protecting the skin against the radiation of the electromagnetic spectrum and new avenues of research into the skin microbiome.

“Amsterdam is a central hub of business in Europe, easily accessed by international suppliers and manufacturers, from the US to the Middle East, which is why we’ve decided to return after 10 years,” said Zulkifli. “We’re thrilled to be introducing our exciting new elements, which have all been imagined to further inform and inspire our visiting cosmetics manufacturers.”

In Stamford, the 24,000-square foot facility employs about 40 people, and comprises a formulation lab, which develops Henkel Beauty Care products including Dial, Right Guard, Tone, Schwarzkopf and got2b as well as Research@Elm, a clinical testing lab.

“Our new location in Stamford allows for optimal access to key suppliers and customers, while giving our research and development team a state-of-the-art workspace to achieve their full potential in creating and testing top quality product formulations and packages,” said Martina Spinatsch, VP-R&D for Henkel’s beauty care division. “In addition, the proximity of our labs to our marketing teams encourages collaboration and enables us to ensure all of our beauty care brands benefit from our advanced technologies and scientific expertise.”

The expanded facility in Trumbull spans 27,000 square feet and includes formulation laboratories, a consumer product and fragrance evaluation center, packaging design, and two pilot plants that support production scale up capabilities for the company’s beauty care and laundry & home care divisions.

“With the expansion of our research and development facilities in Trumbull, Henkel is demonstrating its commitment not only to the local community, but to continuing the growth its laundry, home care and beauty care businesses,” said Dr. Charles Crawford, head of R&D for Henkel’s laundry & home care division in North America.

“By broadening our scientific and technical capabilities, we are investing in our position as a leading provider of laundry, home care and beauty care products in North America, enabling our brands to launch innovative new products that delight consumers,” he said.

Consumer products developed by this division include Persil ProClean, All and Purex laundry detergents; Snuggle fabric conditioners; Renuzit air care products and more.

The Henkel-Trumbull partnership began in 2009 when The Sun Products Corporation, acquired by Henkel in 2016, established its R&D Center at 30 Trefoil Drive. The same year, Henkel donated a sustainably-sourced playground at the Trumbull Nature and Arts Center,. [slug] => dsm-helps-ease-the-stress-of-npd [body] => People all over the world are increasingly concerned about the effects of stress on their health. According to Mintel, more consumers are linking stress to skin conditions. In the UK, for example, 66% of women feel that a stressful lifestyle is affecting the appearance of their skin. Consequently, consumers are looking for ways to streamline their beauty care regime giving them a little extra “me time” to relax and re-energize.

DSM has developed a range of skin, hair, sun and makeup ingredients and formulations to ease the stress on consumers; many of them will be on display during In-Cosmetics Global in Amsterdam. Ingredients include:

• Bel-Even for skin relief from day-to-day stresses. The body uses cortisol, a natural hormone, to deal with stresses of all kinds. However, when this line of defense is overloaded and levels of cortisol in the skin are persistently high, skin may react with undesirable signs of premature ageing. DSM has developed a timely cosmetic solution able to sustainably rebalance the skin’s own stress management system.

• Pentavitin, is described as a natural moisture-magnet. Three hours after a single application, excessively dry skin areas are already much better hydrated. Used daily, Pentavitin improves the appearance of stressed skin, provides powerful hydration to all facial areas, giving consumers a confidence boost.

Formulations to Consider

• Inspired by Korean tone-up creams, the UV Flash Tone formula blurs the boundaries between skin care, makeup and sun care. Although it is transparent, this fluid UV Flash Tone provides a velvet sensation and a smooth, flawless “glass” skin. Enriched with UV filters and actives, its provides efficient protection against UV and blue light.

• Alp’Dry Shampoo leaves hair and scalp feeling fresh and clean with minimum fuss.

• Texturizing Beach Spray creates a relaxed, just-back-from-the-beach look. This hybrid product styles, protects and cares for hair.

• Messy Matte Gum effortlessly styles, protects and cares for hair. Use it to sculpt, texturize and scrunch for high definition with a soft, matte finish.

Sun Solutions

Millennials are very knowledgeable when it comes to sun protection, notes DSM, but unlike the hair and skin segments, there are no dedicated sun care products for this target market. Despite being highly connected, Millennials may therefore be missing out on products that deliver on their expectations. DSM offers concepts and formulations designed specifically to appeal to Millennials, including:

• No FOMO Sun Stick SPF 50. Even the most harassed consumer need have no Fear Of Missing Out key regions of the face like the eye contour, nose and mouth area with this easy-to-use sun protection stick.

• High Glide Moisturizing Sun Essence SPF 30. A lightweight, not-whitening formulation that leaves skin feeling dry and silky. With Niacinamide PC for added protection against blue light and pollution, and hyaluronic acid for enhanced hydration.

The Henkel-Trumbull partnership began in 2009 when The Sun Products Corporation, acquired by Henkel in 2016, established its R&D Center at 30 Trefoil Drive. The same year, Henkel donated a sustainably-sourced playground at the Trumbull Nature and Arts Center,. Today, it still participates in various local charitable and civic events in town.  [views] => 0 [published] => 1 [status] => 3 [priority] => 0 [publish_date] => 2018-03-01 10:27:00 [updated_at] => 2018-03-01 09:56:38 [last_updated_author] => 142074 [uploaded_by] => 0 [user_role_id] => 0 [custom_fields] => [] [custom_fields_old] => [splitcontent] => 1 [content_url] => [related_content_ids] => ["268295","256164","271782","266612","269400","261329","267018","266583","270561","263267","262599","267653","267909","269222","266704","271908"] [is_show_company_name] => [created_at] => 2019-04-09 04:36:23 ) [4] => Content Object ( [className] => Content [contentLinks] => Array ( ) [belongsTo] => [contentIssue] => [id] => 272673 [pageNumber] => [offset] => [totalPages] => [last_query] => [last_sql] => [show_errors] => 1 [databaseServer] => Array ( [key] => master [host] => 172.24.16.232 [user] => rodpub_beta [pass] => MvQQzhse92k58yA [db] => rodpub_beta ) [tableName] => contents [content_type_id] => 2487 [resource_id] => 0 [author_id] => 0 [primary_issue_slug] => [author_name] => {"name":"","title":""} [magazine_id] => 9 [layout_id] => 0 [primary_image] => 0 [primary_image_old] => [slider_image_id] => [banner_image] => 0 [title] => DSM Helps Ease the Stress of NPD [short_title] => [summary] => An array of innovations on display at In-Cosmetics Global. [slug] => dsm-helps-ease-the-stress-of-npd [body] => People all over the world are increasingly concerned about the effects of stress on their health. According to Mintel, more consumers are linking stress to skin conditions. In the UK, for example, 66% of women feel that a stressful lifestyle is affecting the appearance of their skin. Consequently, consumers are looking for ways to streamline their beauty care regime giving them a little extra “me time” to relax and re-energize.

• Total Protection into the Blue and Shine Control SPF 50. A SPF 50 formulation that takes the stress out of formulating actives at low pH and delivers protection into the blue-light spectrum. Controls shine, combats the onset of fine lines and moisturizes skin.

• Ease the stress of sunscreen development with DSM’s upgraded Sunscreen Optimizer. Launched in November 2017, Sunscreen Optimizer enables sunscreen formulators to develop products more efficiently and to optimize existing formulations before going on to verify SPF performance in vivo. The upgraded version of this handy tool includes new features which will debut at In-Cosmetics Global.
