BASF initiated the exploration of rambutan tree’s various cosmetic properties, with the goal to ensure a sustainable use of the resource and generate a positive impact on supply chain development. Based on rambutan (Nepheliumoappaceum) as a resource BASF developed three new bioactives. Nephydrat is an extract of rambutan peel which helps to moisturize the skin and fuels it with energy. Nephoria is an extract of rambutan leaves that helps mature skin to rejuvenate by increasing both collagen and elastin fibers for an improved skin elasticity and reduced wrinkles. For hair care, BASF developed Rambuvital from the seeds of rambutan which protects hair from pollution by moisturizing the scalp, increasing hair follicle vitality and refreshing the strands.
Oily skin is a concern for consumers around the world: hyperactive glands produce excess sebum, which causes shiny skin, enlarged pores or imperfections. BASF’s new active ingredient Bix’Activ, an extract from Bixa orellana seeds, reduces sebum production by restraining the proliferation of sebocytes in sebaceous glands. In addition, it blocks the signal that induces hyper-keratinization and helps to refine pores as a result. Because it also keeps microbiome virulence at bay, the agent helps in reducing skin blemishes. A placebo-controlled clinical study demonstrated extraordinary results: The number of active sebaceous glands decreased by more than 50%, and the follicular sebum excretion rate fell by more than 70%. Bix’Activ is Cosmos- and Ecocert-approved and suitable for NaTrue-certified formulations.
Skin aging is driven by several external factors and especially by light. Blue light radiating from our cell phones and computers, but mainly from the sun, deeply penetrates the skin and can create damages in the dermis and even in the DNA. Ciste’M, a rockrose extract adapted to arid climate, protects the DNA of skin cells from the effects of UVB exposure and prevents the deleterious effects of blue light. Ciste’M also maintains skin integrity and function as it stimulates the release of a protein called ECM1 implicated in skin physiology.
Eco-friendly ingredients for environmental-conscious consumers
Euperlan OP White is a wax based, readily biodegradable and cold processable opacifier dispersion with a superior white appearance for surfactant formulations. The product meets today’s demand for eco-friendly ingredients and its unique properties make it particularly suitable for eco-label conforming skin and hair cleansing formulations. Euperlan OP White complements BASF’s current portfolio of pearlizing wax dispersions and can be used as an alternative to synthetic polymeric opacifiers.
Cegesoft Peel consists of round wax beads that provide a gentle and mild exfoliation. Mainly derived from natural and renewable resources, Cegesoft Peel is a readily biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternative to sharp edged abrasives and non-degradable beads.
BASF’s new Sunscreen Simulator generation
BASF's new generation of the Sunscreen Simulator, the digital lab for sun care formulations, to make it more user-friendly and versatile.
