Dr Jürgen Klein, a biochemist, and his wife Ulrike, a botanist, had always been passionate believers in the healing power of nature. Their vision was to create a pure and natural skin care range combining the ancient arts of alchemy, herbal medicine and homeopathy to reconnect people to nature. As a result, many of Jurlique product ingredients are sourced from its organic and biodynamic Jurlique Farm in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia established over 25 years ago.
Today, Jurlique products are sold in more than 19 countries around the world. Marlies Taylor, director of sales, Jurlique North America, Santa Monica, CA, offers an update on its beauty business.
Happi: What are the hottest trends you are seeing right now in skin care and why?
MT: There are a few interesting trends happening right now with spa. One trend driven directly by consumer demand is naturally based alternatives for some not-so-natural cosmeceutical ingredients. For example, marshmallow root extract is akin to hyaluronic acid as it’s syrup-like consistency is based on a high percentage of mucilage that gives intensively hydrating benefits to the skin.
Another trend has to do with morphing textures, or more specifically, products that start out in one form and evolve into another during application. An example of this would be a thick balm which transforms into an oil when warmed by heat from the hands and the skin. We will soon share very exciting news about professional-only innovations coming this fall that will feature these technologies to push the boundaries of traditional formulation textures.
The K-beauty crazy is making strong impact with the introduction of essences into our skin care rituals. This new skin care step is officially mainstream and looks like it is here to stay. At Jurlique, our new highly concentrated Activating Water Essence is the essential step in every skin care ritual, and it is suitable for every skin type too. Our version is an exceptional plant-based water infusion rich in our organically grown marshmallow root extract that activates your skin’s ability to retain moisture. It even enhances the performance of the serum and moisturizer you apply afterwards.
Happi: What qualities are shoppers looking for in products and services and where do they go to find the latest developments?
MT: Today’s spa-goer is a savvy skin care client. She seeks professional-strength skin care at the spa which offers results as well as a memorable experience. Long gone are the days of going to the spa purely for relaxation purposes. In 2017, she comes to the spa looking for real skin care solutions that deliver visible results.
When purchasing skin care products from a spa, there is also an elevated expectation of ingredient quality. At Jurlique, we guarantee the potency and purity of our skin care by controlling every step of the process – from growing and extracting our own ingredients, to formulating our products. This is our seed-to-skin expertise.
Happi: Are there any ingredients that are big right now?
MT: A key ingredient in our upcoming Herbal Recovery Advanced Day Cream launching soon is Japanese cedar bud Extract, which holds all the vitamins and minerals that allow the trees to regenerate, which is why this extract is so rich in nutrients and antioxidant properties. Pure and powerful herbal botanicals are in high demand as clients become increasingly aware about what goes on their skin and the potent benefits these ingredients offer.
Happi: What are the future trends in skin care overall for 2018 and beyond?
MT: Extrinsic aging factors like the damaging effects of pollution and its corresponding implication on aging skin will become more prevalent concerns. Further to this, the concepts of health and wellbeing are becoming more actively intertwined with the concept of beauty, creating a hybrid driver to purchase for the consumer.
