Mainers are hardworking folk, so when two Maine moms wanted to use products with fewer chemicals, they didn’t just head to the store—they rolled up their sleeves and got to work formulating their own.
Two years later, stores throughout the Northeast US and even Amazon are now carrying the Good Natured Brand, which has “clean home, clean ingredients, clean life” mantra.
The full range of products include laundry soaps, surface cleaners, room and linen sprays, carpet and upholstery deodorizer, bug spray and a personal care SKU, too.
“We use the highest quality ingredients that are truly all-natural, non-toxic and chemical-free, unlike some other, better-known ‘natural’ companies,” noted co-founder Kate Perrin.
Scent is big part of Good Natured’s appeal. Its plant-based laundry detergents that are hypoallergenic and compatible with high-efficiency washers come in lavender, rosemary, and fragrance-free; its all-purpose surface cleaners come in lavender and lemon; and room and linen sprays are offered in lavender, lemongrass and forest pine.
The lone personal care product in the Good Natured stable is a super-hydrating body lotion that comes in in a twist-up stick form for easy application. It contains organic raw coconut oil, pure olive oil, vitamin E and beeswax to soothe and soften skin from head to toe.
This North Yarmouth, ME-based brand has expanded quickly from farmers markets and production in their kitchen to high-profile retailers.
Supermarket chain Hannaford has expanded sales from its Portland-area stores to stores throughout New England. Whole Foods has also approved sales of Good Natured Brand products for stores throughout the North Atlantic region, and plans are underway to expand to other parts of the country, according to Perrin and Hansen.
“We’re proud to say our products are unique, as after being independently tested, all of our cleaning products were rated on the top, green tier of Whole Foods’ ‘Eco Scale,’” said co-founder Lisa Hansen.
Independent natural food stores, food co-ops and Ace and True Value hardware also stock the Good Natured Brand.
And in a sure nod to its roots, one of the most well-known Maine-based brands ever is also stocking a Good Natured SKU. After doing its independent testing on the company’s bug spray, L.L. Bean chose it as its natural bug spray. Good Natured DEET-free bug spray uses a blend of four essential oils to effectively repel mosquitos, no-see-ums, ticks, fleas, and other flying and biting insects.
And anyone that’s spent time in Maine over the summer knows there’s plenty of need for that!
