Oh snap! When Jill Rossini of Denver dropped her favorite eyeshadow and it broke into pieces, it was a blessing in disguise.
According to the cosmetic entrepreneur, “I had already replaced it twice! I was done wasting money and donating makeup to the trash, so I started searching online and found DIY hacks to fix broken makeup, but I was never satisfied with the result. From there, I set off to design the most intuitive and effective tool to fix broken makeup.”
After years of testing and retesting prototypes, Rossini, a former esthetician and a graphic designer, finally had a solution to not only fix cracked makeup like new but to also blend extra makeup to create new shades.
“What if I could recycle all of my broken and unused makeup instead of throwing it out?” she asked.
Starting with an idea that quickly grew into an obsession, Fixy Makeup (www.fixymakeup.com) repairs broken powdered makeup as opposed to throwing it away. Its mission is to help beauty aficionados save time and money; Rossini strives to design creative and elegant solutions for makeup users who are searching for the next best thing.
Featuring a blending box, grinding tool, makeup press, and an all-natural based binding spray, the Fixy Makeup Repair and Creation Kit ($48) includes everything users need to take their powders from pulverized to pressed. The set also includes a magnetic palette and three different sizes of magnetic makeup tins. FIXY also sells additional makeup tins as well as empty magnetic pallets.
Rossini told Happi, “I used my background as a graphic designer and esthetician to start the journey, but it was countless hours of researching and studying that allowed me to learn all aspects of the business, from product design to marketing to manufacturing.”
Acknowledging that Fixy’s journey has not always been one of glitz and glamour, Rossini says it was “five steps forward, three steps back” every step of the way.
“The Fixy Makeup Repair Kit grew out of years of testing. The screen developed for the kit allows anyone to grind their makeup down to a perfectly fine powder, which is crucial for pressing it back to new,” she told Happi. “I’ve also developed the perfect balance in a binding solution that is used for non-mineral makeup. Mineral makeup will often press without the solution.”
Another key component is the design of the press, which allows the user to press the makeup back to brand new without any sticking issues. The press has three size options, enabling users to fix eyeshadow, blush/bronzer or press powder/highlighter. The kit also features a magnetic pallette to place newly-pressed makeup into once you press it into one of the three different sized makeup tins.
According to Rossini, the Fixy customer is the true makeup fanatic as well as maybe a makeup artist.
“Our customers want the ability to not only save money by fixing all their broken makeup, whether in a large palette or individual cases, but they also love the crafty side on them, which allows them to blend colors they aren’t using in order to create a new shade,” she said. “They can even move all their favorite makeup into one of our larger magnetic palettes to help declutter.”
For 2019, Rossini is looking to secure additional funding to help expand the line and build brand awareness.
“In the coming year, I’ll also be looking to expand into larger retailers and evaluate the opportunity to sell through a home shopping network,” she added.
