Whether you purchased it yourself (like a classic Lipsmacker lip balm) or it was thrust upon you (probably a deodorant from mom), those very first personal care and beauty products hold a special place in our hearts.
A new bottle of Jean Nate gifted at holiday. Axe spray acquired before the big dance. An Aziza eyeshadow quad from the corner drug store purchased with birthday money (yeah, that’s mine).
We asked some of the founders profiled in Happi’s Indie Inc feature about memorable products from their teenage years. Here’s what they had to say:
Anna Mitsios, Founder of Edible Beauty Australia (Our Indie Inc. profile this month!)
“My mum gifted me a beautiful French day lotion! It was incredibly luxe in a clear airless pump with gold trimming. I definitely thought it was something that very sophisticated women used. It smelled ‘expensive’ and was incredibly smooth on my skin. I used it so sparingly as I wasn’t sure if I would be able to find it again.
Risa Barash, Founder of Fairy Tales Hair Care and TBH Kids
“I loved Sea Breeze!! I loved feeling that slight tingle and knowing your face was clean and stripped of all oils. I was always into skin care.”
Aaron O’Bryan, Founder of AOB Products
“I was obsessed with tan and hairspray, but I try not to look back, these were not my greatest looks.”
Anna Brightman Founder of UpCircle Beauty
“For me it was my first perfume. I wear the same one now! Often specific scents remind me of people, memories or places, so it’s important to wear one that feels like it represents you.”
Leila Kashani, CEO, Alleyoop (See Kashani’s Indie Inc profile in our December issue!)
“I was also very simple as a teen and used very little products. The only thing I used was this jet-black eyeliner that had the most amazing pay off. I found this eyeliner through my mom’s hairdresser who had a contact in Iran who would get it to us. To this day I haven’t found an eyeliner that lives up to that one!”
