Sunday II Sunday is, quite frankly, for people who sweat—a lot. In fact, the company maintains its formulas are designed for active women. products are made with active botanical ingredients that remove sweat, balance moisture, and maintain the health of your hair and scalp pre, post, and during your workouts. When used daily, Sunday II Sunday proprietary formulas are proven to deliver a healthier scalp in just 28 days, according to the company.
Based in Plainfield, IN, Sunday II Sunday (SIIS) is owned by Infinite Looks, Inc., a company founded in 2020 by entrepreneur Keenan Beasley. He created Infinite Looks to address the hair care habits of the active Black community—a demographic he maintains has been long overlooked by mainstream beauty companies. According Sunday II Sunday research, upwards of 40% of Black women do not work out because of their hair. Sunday II Sunday products provide care between less frequent washes for the removal of sweat, buildup, and environmental damages, helping to remove barriers from people looking to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
Product formulas include Soothe Me daily scalp serum, Root Refresh, Revive Me daily moisturizing spray and Edge Flourish daily nourishing serum infused with biotin infused with peppermint oil.
SIIS is less than a year old, so it’s no surprise that the company is still learning about its customers. Christina Williams, associate brand manager, Sunday II Sunday, told Happi that the company is focused on barrier and sweat protection.
“We have a firm understanding of sweat and its impact on the hair and scalp,” she explained. “Sweat is composed of salt and water. The water evaporates and leaves salt crystals that cause itching and dryness.”
For example, Root Refresh is a micellar rinse with apple cider vinegar. The formula promises to cleanse and refresh hair and scalp without shampooing. It also removes product buildup and excess without stripping hair of its natural oils. According to SIIS, Root Refresh is suitable for braids, locs, updos, weaves and extensions.
SIIS captured the attention of consumers and retailers. In less than a year, products were stocked in Sephora, Macys, Bloomingdale’s and Ulta Beauty.
“For a small startup, that’s a quick ramp up,” noted Williams.
Ingredient Story
Consumers are reading labels more closely than ever and Sunday II Sunday is quick to point out the benefits on its bottles. For example, Soothe Me Daily Scalp Serum contains peppermint oil, peppermint extract and Alternsis Botanical Complex. It promises to help naturally soothe dry, tight itchy scalp in just 15 minutes. With daily use, the patent-pending formula will help to reduce dry scalp, itch, and flakes in just 28 days, according to Sunday II Sunday.
Revive Me Daily Moisturizing Spray contains Argan oil, green tea, tea tree extract, and Alternsis Botanical Complex. This light moisturizing formula is said to fight frizz and humidity, and pampers hair with nourishing ingredients that bring life, shine and a renewing boost back to those weighed down curls. With daily use, the patent-pending formula will help to reduce dry scalp, itch and flakes in just 28 days. It is suitable for slightly wavy to very tight coily hair textures, according to Sunday II Sunday.
Edge Flourish daily nourishing serum contains, as the name states, biotin. But the product also contains sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, fruit extract, banana extract and safflower seed oil. Together, the oils are said to provide ultra-lightweight, flake-free protection that helps to repair and strengthen a weak, damaged hairline. Furthermore, the banana botanical extract and biotin provides added nourishment for soft, yet strong edges, according to the company.
New Year, New Products
In 2022, SIIS executives are taking a deeper dive into their customers’ lifestyles. It’s not just about that hour that she spends in the gym, according to Williams. Sunday II Sunday researchers are creating products that help her move from workouts to stepping out for a night out.
“We are creating new products that will facilitate that transition,” said Williams. “As a startup, we are close to our consumer. She tells us what she loves and what she hates.”
Whether by email or direct message, the goal at SIIS is to deliver a solution she loves. For example, SIIS learned that a subset of Root Refresh users loves the formula, but can’t wear it as much as they would like. Now, SIIS is working to create a formula for everyday use.
When the company introduced Revive Me Conditioner, some consumers weren’t happy with the applicator. SIIS worked with its supplier to find a delivery nozzle that exceeds expectations.
“She loves it!” asserted Williams. “The contents are the same, but now there’s a more palatable bloom coming out of the bottle.”
Looking ahead, Williams said clean beauty is here to stay. Whether she shops Clean at Sephora or Ulta’s Conscious Beauty, it all resonates with consumers.
“We’re meeting those standards, while delivering a high efficacy formula that she can be comfortable with.”
All SIIS products are free of silicones, sulfates and other ingredients that find their way on “no no” lists. Williams admitted that while some ingredients that make retail lists are actually perfectly fine for hair, “at the end of the day, we listen to our consumer—and they are very vocal!”
The pandemic ushered in age of self-care. Williams doesn’t expect the trend to end anytime soon. At the same time, consumers want products that are beneficial and easy to use.
“The pandemic caused a lot of stress. A Southern California stylist told me a client wanted to cut all of their hair off because she screwed it up and wanted to start all over.”
Talk about stress! Still, Williams said the DIY trend will continue, and Sunday II Sunday is committed to creating hair care solutions for its customers.
“We want to make sure that they have the formulas they need to achieve the healthiest hair possible.”
