Vertellus, a global manufacturer of fine and specialty chemicals, has rolled out Freshstat, a CPC-based preservative and deodorizing agent that offers formulators proven efficacy at very low concentrations.
Freshstat (INCI: Cetylpyridinium chloride) is an odorless, colorless liquid that provides manufacturers of leave-on and rinse-off products with a high degree of formulation versatility due to its effectiveness across a broad pH range, according to the company.
From an efficacy perspective, Freshstat is proven effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi in creams, lotions and body wash formulations. Safety testing has shown that CPC is negative for skin sensitization potential and irritation at formulation levels up to 0.5%, making CPC an ideal preservative and deodorizing agent in a variety of formulations at concentrations ranging from 0.02% to 0.15%.
Freshstat does not contain parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing substances or triclosan.
“Ingredient safety and cost-effectiveness are at the forefront of formulators’ minds and the minds of consumers who purchase leave-on and rinse-off products,” said Anahita Lion, senior business development manager at Vertellus. Freshstat offers both. Because it is efficacious at very low levels, Freshstat enables personal care manufacturers to produce cost-effective formulations.
Although a relative newcomer in rinse-off and leave-on formulations, CPC has been effectively used as an ingredient in oral health care products in the US, Europe and Japan for more than 40 years. It is approved as a cosmetics preservative by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) recently finalized a favorable safety opinion for CPC as a cosmetic and oral care preservative at prescribed levels.
Freshstat is manufactured by Vertellus’ Zeeland, MI facility under cGMP, Kosher and Halal conditions. Additional information on Freshstat will be available at stand F150 during In-Cosmetics, April 12-14.
