The ‘Lived in Curlyage’ Look Explained

“Lived In Curlyage” is a trending style for the season. To understand it better, Happi asked Sean Godard, Redken master artist and global brand ambassador, for insight.

“The 2024 hair color trend is all about lived in color, the perfect solution for low maintenance but high impact celebrity inspired hair color that everyone is asking for,” he said.

According to Godard, the “Lived In Curlyage”  look is for “curly girls that crave extra dimension.”

Godard—an in-demand editorial and session colorist/finisher whose work has appeared in fashion and industry magazines around the world—says this high impact technique enhances the curl pattern, providing pops of color and added texture which really defines the voluminous shape of curly hair giving that sun kissed “I just got back from a beach vacation vibe.”

This technique is especially great for naturally darker bases, insists Godard “because even if you want to turn up the contrast it will still grow out seamlessly.” For consumers, that means they don’t have to come back to the salon as frequently for the heavy lifting highlights.

To keep hair looking healthy, shiny and on tone, Godard says Redken Shades EQ Gloss is the answer.

The Shades EQ Hair Gloss formula includes Active Cationic Complex (positively charged ingredients that easily bind to the hair to condition, detangle, smooth and increase manageability), Keracare (with xylose to provide heat protection and help prevent breakage); and coconut oil to protect hair’s vibrancy.

Shades EQ glossing service take just about an hour, monthly, for up to 3 months in between the consumer’s next highlighting service saving them time and money—but still having the most fashion forward celebrity inspired hair color,” noted Godard.

Also trending, per Godard, are lived-in lights and lived-in piece.

Lived-In lights is perfect for clients craving low-maintenance blonde. With this trend, you still maintain the bright blonde, especially around the face but have a soft transition from your natural base color. This eliminates any harsh stripey foil lines and allows for a natural seamless grow out resulting in a natural color, according to Godard.

Lived-in piece is the 2024 update of the face frame highlight, which Godard said is a technique suited for naturally dark bases because it grows out seamlessly.

“We all know blonding services can seem like a lot of upkeep but at Redken we have developed these trends to keep your hair looking fresh out of the salon for up to 3 months,” he shared.

In addition to his editorial work, Godard has appeared as a regular makeover expert on popular TV shows and has worked backstage with celebrities at the MTV Video Music Awards in both New York City and Los Angeles.  He previous celebrity clients include Emma Stone and Shirley Manson.
