Anti-aging skin care is the largest segment in the facial skin care category, according to Mintel, holding nearly 40% of the market. But it’s not just Baby Boomers buying up these products; incorporation of anti-aging lotions, serums and creams into one’s regimen is starting at a younger age than ever before.
According to findings from The NPD Group’s latest Women’s Skincare In-Depth Consumer Report, 39% of women ages 25-34 say anti-aging is an important benefit they look for in facial skin care products. This is a significant jump from the 18-24 year old age group where only 19% of women feel anti-aging is important.
“Gen Y is at an age when they are facing many changes, including in their skin and the way they look in general,” said Karen Grant, vice president and senior global industry analyst, The NPD Group, Inc. “This group still has skin care concerns from their youth like oily skin, breakouts, and keeping acne at bay. But they also start to shift their focus toward preventing wrinkles and lightening their dark spots caused by sun damage.”
“Open to learning, reachable and seeking solutions, Gen Y women are a critical age group for skin care marketers to target now, as they are beginning to develop skin care regimens that are likely to follow them throughout the rest of their lives,” concluded Grant.
Happi scanned the category for innovative products. From lotions to crèmes to devices, here’s a look at some recent anti-aging launches:

• From ingredients to new treatments, industry expert Navin Geria—conference chair of HAPPI’s recent 2013 Anti-Aging Conference & Tabletop Exhibition—provides insight into some key issues in the war against aging skin. HAPPI: What role does vitamin C and E play in sunscreen formulations? Geria: Vitamin C and E, or any other antioxidant, help skin recover from UV rays and sun damage. HAPPI: What are disadvantages of oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate in sunscreen formulations? Geria: Oxybenzone irritates skin and helps generate cell-damaging free radicals when exposed to UV rays. Look for products formulated with avobenzone. It works like oxybenzone but does not pose any health concerns. Some research on retinyl palmitate, aka vitamin A, has shown that it breaks down into toxic free radicals when exposed to UV rays causing skin aging. HAPPI: What role does niacinamide play in facial moisturizers? Geria: Niacinamide increases collagen production and also softens the appearance of lines and wrinkles. HAPPI: What role do infrared rays play in the development of skin discoloration and melasma? Geria:Sunrays contain IR and visible light. IR rays are converted into heat and cause inflammation and is also angiogenic. Research has shown them to cause skin discoloration and melasma. Currently, sunscreens do not have IR-protecting compounds. HAPPI: Is there a natural alternative that is clinically proven to be equivalent to retinoids? Geria: Rosemary and bark extract from the Anogeissus tree appears to plump collagen reserves. A clinical trial by Origins showed that 83% of users experienced reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles and increased skin firmness with Plantscription SPF 25 anti-aging cream. HAPPI: How can you make anti-aging products work faster? Geria: As we age, skin cells get sluggish. If you use an exfoliating cleanser the previous night, it would help clear up dead skin cells. This would facilitate better absorption of the active deeper and quicker into the skin. HAPPI: Are there any unique facials out now? Geria: Caviar pearls are used by some spas, because they are thought to leave facial skin more firm. There are now beer facials promoted for men by some spas. It is said that beer promotes skin elasticity. Gold facials are offered by some spas—it is believed that it helps rejuvenate cell structure of the skin. In Japan, a spa has offered for the first time facial treatment that uses live snails. When placed on the face, they crawl around secreting slime. It is thought that slime is an excellent moisturizer and it also reduces inflammation. |
