Hamilton C. Carson, former longtime editor of Happi magazine, died after suffering from cancer on Dec. 29, 2017. He was 89.
Carson was born in Palmyra, NJ in 1928. He graduated in 1950 from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where he was an editor on the Targum, and started a career in journalism that ran until his retirement in 1993. He edited several trade magazines for Rodman Publishing (now Rodman Media) in Ramsey, NJ, and at the time of his retirement was editorial director for the company.
“Everything Ham did, he did with class,“ recalled Tom Branna, Happi editor. “Yet, he also had a rapier wit that could be turned on everyone—including himself!”
Outside work, Carson was active in school affairs, being elected to the Board of Education in the 1970s and serving for several years as president. He was most proud of serving on the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey‘s board of trustees. Carson sang with the Verona-Cedar Grove Chorus (now Verona Voices) for 38 years, rarely missing a performance. Carson’s musical gift was also shared at Rodman Publishing, too. He wrote—and sang—songs for the annual holiday party.
Carson is survived by his wife Helen. They had five children: Robert (Elizabeth; son William), Christopher (Carol; children David, Lydia and Andrew), Cynthia (deceased), Richard and Ellen (Patrick Dillon; son Alexander). The youngest of six, Carson is also survived by his older brother William.
